In researching the Allens of Allentown (near Endicott, Virginia), I have found one major issue that seems to stump many people researching this family. I would like to share information that I believe clarifies the confusion in this family in the hopes that others who are researching the Allens will not be misled the way I way when I originally started my research. Many people believe that William Allen Sr. who wed Clary Peerson (Pearson) on Feb. 11, 1812, was the father of William Allen who wed Susannah Smith on March 10, 1812 assuming that the older father was marrying during the same year his grown son was marrying. However, after much in depth research, I have come to the conclusion that this is not true. The following is my reason:
1. According to the book "Franklin County Virginia Death Records 1853-1896" by Nell Hailey, William Allen Sr. (white male), farmer, died Oct. 17, 1876 in Franklin County, aged 89 yrs. He was born in Franklin Co. and was the spouse Of Clary Allen, Clary Allen reporting. According to this information, William Allen Sr. would have been born about 1787.
2. The 1850 Franklin County census identifies the William Allen who married Susannah Smith:
Allen, William age 65 farmer $600 rl est (He would have been 27 yrs old when he married in 1812 which means he would have been born around 1785.); Susanah age 55 wife; Elizabeth age 38; Ruth age 35; Rachael age 32; Susanah age 18; Frances age 12; and William age 23.
Therefore, the William Allen Sr. who married Clary and the William Allen who married Susanah could not have been father and son because they were born within 5 years of each other. In my research, I have found that William and Susanah Allen are the Allens of Allentown (Endicott, Virginia) from which my family descended. I hope this information helps to clarify the confusion between William Allen Sr. and William Allen.

I am looking for decendants of John Bernard who lived in Fluvanna County, and either he or his son, Peter came to Franklin County and settled on the Blackwater River. Peter had a son named Peter, Jr., who had a son named William, and his sons included twins, Peter Jasper and Robert Newton. Robert Newton had a son named Russell Barbour, and he is my father. My father never talked much about his family, and so now my brother Russ, Jr., are trying to fill in some of the other relatives, such as who did they marry, who were the children, etc. My father was born in Franklin County in 1896. His father Robert Newton is listed on the 1850 census as six months old. I have talked to a lady who did some research, and she says that my father's line came to Franklin County from Fluvanna County, while her line which includes a Walter Bernard, came from Maryland to Franklin County, and that there seem to be two diffrent lines here. If you can help on this in any way, I would be more than happy.
