LONGFIELD, PETTY, SMITH -
I am seeking information on Anthony Smith (father's name Jabe Smith) who was born in Franklin County c. 1820. Anthony escaped from slavery during the late 1840s; he was assisted in his escape by Quakers who smuggled him across the country to California. I think he was accompanied by Permelia Petty also from Franklin Co. Anthony & Permelia married in California in 1850; their daughter Emma was born in 1852 the year they set sail for Australia where they settled in Box Hill, near Melbourne in the state of Victoria. Emma married Robert Longfield, a native of New York. The writer is a direct descendant of Emma's sister Matilda. Anthony became a naturalized citizen in 1856 and lived until 1906.
