Pension Application of John Richardson: S4109

The State of Ohio  Highland County  SS.

            On this 29th day of October AD 1833 personally appeared in open court before the court of common pleas of said county now sitting John Richardson a resident of said county who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. that he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers & served as herein stated. Aged 71 years.

            Questions by the Court.

1st Question. Where and in what year were you born? Answer. I was born in Bedford County in the State of Virginia on the 12th day of November 1762

2d. Have you any record of your age? A. I have not.

3d. Where were you living when called into service, where have you lived since the Revolutionary war & where do you now live?

Answer. I lived when called into service in Bedford County Virginia. I lived in said County 42 years when I moved to Iredell county in the state of North Carolina where I lived 5 years  from thence I moved to Highland County Ohio where I have ever since resided.

4th. How were you called into service? Answer. I always volunteered.

5th. State the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops where you served, such continental & militia regiments as you can recollect & the general circumstances of your service.

A. In the month of August AD 1780 I volunteered for the Virginia militia of Bedford County Virginia under Captain Robert Adams in the regiment commanded by Colonel Charles Lynch. General Steuben was our commanding officer. We marched soon after I volunteered to Prince Edward Courthouse where we remained 3 or 4 days – thence we marched to Petersburg Va. where we remained until I served out my tour of 4 months when I was verbally discharged by my said Captain & returned home.

In the month of July AD 1781 I again volunteered at Bedford Virginia for the Virginia militia under Captain Quillen Gilbert & in the regiment commanded by Colonel James Callaway. By the command of my superior officers I was selected among others to drive cattle for the use of the army during this time of my service & I was out my whole tour of three months in this capacity after which I was verbally discharged at said County of Bedford by my Captain. I served in all 7 months during the revolutionary war.

6th Did you ever receive a discharge from the service? Answer I never received a written discharge.

7th State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood who can testify as to your character for veracity & their belief of your services as a soldier of the revolution. James Quinn, Samuel Bell, Lewis Duckwall senior, John Smith & others will testify as is required.

I have no documentary evidence nor do I know any living witness by whom I can prove my service.

This applicant hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity but the present & declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.
