Virginia Franklin County towit
On this 1st day of September 1832
personally appeared in open Court before John M. Holland, Richard M.
Taliaferro, William B. Williams & Pleasant Dickenson (The County Court of
Franklin now sitting) William Campbell by birth a scotchman and aged 83 years a
resident at this time of Franklin County who being first duly sworn according
to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the
benefits of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he
enlisted for three years during the Revolutionary War [several words illegible]
of regulars commanded by Capt. [John] Marks
that he enlisted in Albermarle [sic: Albemarle] County Va. the place of
his then residence, [word illegible] he marched in said company through
Alexandria, Georgetown & Baltimore & thence to the head quarters of
Gen’l. Washington near Philadelphia where he served [two words illegible]
faithfully & was honorably discharged at the end of his term. There he was
attached to the 14th Va. Regiment there the Regiment was commanded
by Col. Lewis. He was in the battles of Monmouth [28 June 1778], Germantown [4
Oct 1777] & Brandiwine [sic: Brandywine, 11 Sep 1777]. He remembers many of
the distinguished officers of the main army. those who served with the main
army. He remembers the good & great Washington, Generals [Charles] Lee,
Lafayette, [George] Weedon Col.
Parker Gen’l [Henry] Knox & others
too tedious to mention. He enlisted in the year 1776 as he believes. He has
lost his discharge & has no documentary evidence. He has long lived in
Franklin County Va. He was discharged by Capt. [?]ton. He is known to many of
the County & the member of Congress of this district & others &
appeals to them for the Character he supports & their belief of his
services. besides he produces the Testimony of Thomas Craig a respectable
Citizen a soldier of the revolution who served with him & was with him in
several battles. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to pension or
annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension
Roll of the agency of any state.

On 1 April 1839 Sally Campbell,
about 81, applied for a pension stating that she married William Campbell on 20
July 1783 in Albemarle County VA and that they continued to live there for 17
years before moving to Franklin County, where he died on 18 July 1833.
