My name is Greg Divers. I have relatives all through Franklin
County, but primarily from the Thorntons Mountain , Hawpatch Mt areas.
I have been researching my genealogy for 20+ years. Back in 1981 my father
and I cleaned up, fenced and gated a Young family cemetery on Hawpatch
Road. It has since grown over. A cousin nearby urged me to
contact you so it can be recorded in the county records. I live in
Stafford, VA and I recently visited Thorntons mountain to refresh my memories.
The cemetery is where John William Young, his wife Julia Franklin Thornton Young, some of John's sons, and an oral confirmation back in 1981 had John's Parents Saunders Young and his wife Martha America Keys Young buried there with stone markers. It is located on Hawpatch Road just south of the intersection with Swellin Rd. As you travel up the hill the cemetery is on the left back inside the woodline. I propped the gate up which had fallen down, it has the name Young burned into the planking of the gate. Also according to oral history, Young's Store was located in the clearing below the cemetery. Youngs Store was a Post Office and enlistment station for Co. B 57th VA CSA. I have not been able to confirm the location in books, but my great cousin who had been born in the 1880s told me many stories from Thorntons mountain that being one.
