In loving graditude and veneration this
humble memorial is raised to the memory of
Mary Pendleton,
formerly Burnley and first Overton, who
closed her temporal life at Bear Island 25 Sept. 1835....
Mrs. Mary O. Meux
consort of Dr. Thomas Meux and daughter of Colonel
Hardin Burnley whose remains lie immediately to the
west.
She was born January 1800, married in June 1818
and died in September 1825 leaving three little
children: Mary Jeanetta, Thomas and Anne....
Note: Hardin Burnley was a member of the
Governor's
Council and Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.
There are other stones in this cemetery
which are in ruins.
More research is needed to determine the exact
number of graves.
