Nansemond County is extinct, merging with the City of Suffolk in 1974. Nansemond County was named for the Nansemond tribe. Nansemond County became the City of Nansemond in Jul 1972. Suffolk was incorporated in 1808 as a town. It was incorporated as a city in 1910. The City of Suffolk/Former Nansemond County are surrounded by Isle of Wight County, Virginia; Newport News (former Warwick County), Virginia; Norfolk County, Virginia; Hertford County, North Carolina; Camden County, North Carolina; Gates County, North Carolina; and Southampton County, Virginia.
