BENTHALL MARRIAGES AND DEATHS FROM EARLY PORTSMOUTH NEWSPAPERS  
(taken from the Emmerson papers)

1820, May 24, page 22 - MELANCHOLY CASUALTY - We are informed that 
yesterday morning, whilst Mrs. Benthall, wife of Captain Benthall, 
accompanied by another lady, were riding in a gig a short distance 
from Portsmouth, the horse suddenly took fright and ran off.  Mrs. 
Benthall was thrown from the gig, by which circumstance, we lament 
to state, her neck and both arms were broken, and she expired 
immediately - her companion escaped unhurt.

1820, May 29, page 16 - Death of Mrs. Benthall, wife of Captain 
William Benthall.

1829, April 17, page 37 - Married in Portsmouth last evening by the 
Rev. Mr. Sherwood, Mr. William Brooks to Miss Mary, eldest daughter of 
Capt. William Benthall.

1837, May 17, page 9 - Married in Portsmouth on Thursday evening 11th 
inst. by the Rev. William Neil, Mr. Henry V. Niemeyer to Miss Jane 
Frances, second daughter of Captain William Benthall.

1837, May 17, page 29 - Departed this life in Portsmouth at 4 o'clock
yesterday morning after a long illness, Mrs. Miriam Benthall, consort 
of Captain William Benthall, in the 54th year of her age.  In the death 
of this lady the Presbyterian Church, Christianity and Society have 
lost a valuable member.

1838, November 13, page 16 - Married in Portsmouth by the Rev. William 
Neil, Captain William Benthall, to Miss Jane Ferguson, all of that place.

1840, September 10, page 11 - Died at the residence of Captain William
Benthall, on Sabbath evening (6th) after a short illness, Miss Esther Ann
Ferguson, daughter of the late Robert S. Ferguson, of this place.

1854, March 6, page 5 - Died in Portsmouth on the 2nd inst. Mrs. Margaret 
H. Jenkins, consort of Jethro A. Jenkins, Esq. and youngerst daughter 
of Captain William Benthall, aged 36.  For many years she was an 
exemplary of the Presbyterian Church.

1854, October 20, page 44 - Died in Portsmouth yesterday morning at 5:30
o'clock at the age of 75 years, Captain William Benthall for many years an
active and intelligent shipmaster of this part.
