At a Court of Oyer and Terminar continued by adjournment and held for the County of Orange at the Courthouse on Tuesday the twenty eight of February one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven for the trial of Lewis a negro man slave the property of Johannes Williams charged with robbing the stage in July and November last and stealing therefrom a silk dress, a velvet vest and two breast pins.
Editor's Note: Not all stage robberies took place in the "wild west" as evidence by the above item from the minutes of the Orange County Court. Lewis and others were tried, convicted and punished by receiving "thirty nine lashes on his bare back well laid on at the common whipping post." Lewis was defended by William Fitzhugh Gordon.
