Maplewood Cemetery is a victim of neglect, insensitive maintenance, vandalism, and the
absense of preservation and restoration programs. OF GRAVE CONCERN is an
attempt to make others aware of the value of this cemetery and to encourage
participation in efforts to protect, preserve, and research this
historic site.

PROBLEMS FOUND AT MAPLEWOOD
Maplewood Cemetery is located behind Martha Jefferson
Hospital in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia. It is Charlottesville's oldest
public cemetery, established in 1827 by the Town of Charlottesville. The City of Charlottesville has yet to designate it as a historic property. Maplewood is
deteriorating and is without the protection of local, state or federal preservation laws.
Maplewood is owned by the City of
Charlottesville. Parks and Grounds Department is charged with
its management and maintanence. Neighborhood Planning Department writes the ordinances related to this cemetery. The City Treasurer manages the perpetual care
