Good Woman Goes to Her Reward

We regret to record the death of Mrs. George W. Aleshire, which occurred very unexpectedly at her home near Stanley, last Saturday, July 14th. She had been in ill-health for some time, though no one though her condition so serious. Her husband at the time of her death was in Winchester, where he was being treated for cancer, and the sad news- which was broken to him as he descended the car steps at Stanley Saturday evening, was indeed a crushing blow to him!.. Mrs. Aleshire was a daughter of the late Abram Painter, a graduate of the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute at Staunton, and was a bright, cheerful woman, notwithstanding her great affliction- that of being blind all her life. She leaves a husband, three brothers- Messrs. John W., Jubal and Isaac Painter, and two sisters- Mrs. John Short and Mrs. Henry Petefish, all living near Stanley.

Mrs. Annie Alger***

Page Courier, Thursday 1 Oct 1903

MURDER NEAR MARKSVILLE

A shooting affray occurred near the foot of Tanner's Ridge, south of Marksville, this county, last Saturday evening, in which Mrs. Annie L. Alger, wife of Ashby Alger, was instantly killed, the shooting being done by Philip Alger, a brother of Ashby.

The Algers, together with several friends, had left Marksville early in the evening for their home, several miles distant, some being on horseback, while others were walking. The testimony of Ashby Alger at the inquest held at Marksville on Sunday evening before Coroner W.L. Hudson, of Luray, is that the party had proceeded peaceably on their journey homeward until they reached the foot of Tanner's Ridge, when Philip Alger, who was in advance of the others about ten steps, wheeled around in the road and fired a shot in the direction of those behind, demanding with an oath that they come no further.

Mrs. Alger, anxious to reach her infant at home, was in front of the party, and received the ball in the abdomen, producing almost instant death. The dead woman's husband immediately left the scene of the tragedy for an officer, but soon met several friends and with them returned to where his wife was lying in the road, her head supported by Mrs. John W. Alger, mother of the Alger brothers. When he reached the spot he says Philip Alger was standing over the dead body of his wife, waving his pistol, and remarking "Damn her, let her go."

At this juncture Ashby Alger struck Philip with a rock, and the two men then engaged in a struggle during which they fell almost across the body of the dead woman. In the fall the revolver flew out of Philip's hadn and was seized by Ashby.

An autopsy was held by Drs. Hudson and F.P. Koontz, but the ball was not found. The shooting is said to have been down with a Smith & Wesson revolver, 38 calibre. Deputy Sheriff Kibler arrested Alger and brought him to the Stanley "lockup" where he was kept till Sunday morning, when he was brought to Luray and lodged in jail. The terrible crime is said to have been entirely unprovoked and has greatly incensed the law abiding people of the community.

Alger, when places in the steel cage at the jail expressed great surprise, saying the shooting was simply an accident. We understand that his trial will probably take place at the November term of court. We do not know whether he has as yet employed counsel or not.

TRAGIC DEATH

Mr. William F. Bradley, an aged citizen of Blosserville, this county, came to a sudden and horrible death last Friday under peculiar circumstances. He had risen very early in the morning and was building a fire in the fire-place of his room, when from some cause he fell into the fire-place. His clothing took fire, and before the flames could be extinguished he was burned so seriosuly that he died in the afternoon of the same day. His wife, who has been an invalid for about two years, was lying in bed in the same room, and seeing her husband's terrible struggles to free himself from the torture of the flames, by almost superhuman effort, jumped from her bed and assisted him in smothering the fire, or he doubtless would have been burned to a crisp. Mr. Bradley was the eldest living member of one of the oldest and most popular families in Page... Mr. Bradley had been a member of the Dunkard church for a number of years, and his funeral was conducted by Elder Martin Rothgeb, on Sunday morning... at Mount Zion meeting-house.             Another Man Killed on the Track!

William Campbell, alias “Buck” Campbell, son of James Campbell, a young man about 20 years of age, was killed on the railroad track a few rods south of Sands, this county, last Saturday morning about 1 o’clock. The facts as developed at the Coroner’s inquest are as follows: Campbell and several companions left Mr. Biedler’s store at Sands between 10 and 11 o’clock Saturday night, all, our informant states, under the influence of liquor. They went south on the railroad track as far as the Ochre Bank trestle where they all laid down. Later three of the party left, when Campbell, the man who lost his life, and his cousin, Chales Campbell, went to sleep, and when the later awoke the man, who was killed was gone. Nothing was seen of him till after ..illegible.. Sunday morning the train men found his dead body on the track about 300 yards north of the trestle. It is supposed the freight train south soon after mid-night was the one that killed him. Coroner Dr. Hudson was summoned early Sunday morning and held and inquest on the body, when the jury, composed of the following gentlemen, A.J. Foltz, G.W. Good, James H. Coffman, J.W. Good, G.W. Weaver and T.S. Brown, rendering the following verdict “that the said Campbell came to his death June 15th by being run over by a train on the S.V.R.R., he being under the influence of liquor.” Campbell’s body was little mutilated.

MURDER!

Noah Fox Killed by his Son-In-Law, George Riley

The usually quiet community of Sandy Hook was thrown into intense excitement last Monday evening by the killing of Noah Fox by his son-in-law, George Riley. The difficulty grew out of an unhappy family trouble, of which Fox accused a brother of Riley, his son-in-law, as being the author, and on Monday went to the field on the farm of Dr. Brumback, where Riley was at work, and it is alleged, abused and beat him. Riley afterwards secured his shot gun and went in pursuit of Fox, who it was reported, was then at John D. Ruffner's distillery. On his way he met Mr. Holmes, the Rural Mail Messenger, to whom he related the trouble he had with Fox, and said that he was going to shoot him in the legs. Mr. Holmes reasoned with him, and tried to persuade him to go back to work. But he could not be prevailed upon, and continued his course. When he and Fox met at the distellery it seems from all accounts that his anger had cooled and that he was disposed to leave without further trouble had not Fox followed him up. Fox, it is stated, twice demaned him to put down his gun, which he did, but at the same time warned Fox not to advance upon him. Fox, not heeding the warning, went towards Riley, when the latter raised his gun and fired, the load, consisting of bird short, entering Fox's body near the heart, causing instant death. The weapon was a single-barrel shot gun and the distance between the two men when the short was fired was only about twenty five steps.

Riley made no effort to escape and was arrested the same night by Sheriff Rosser and lodged in jail in this place. He is about thirty years old and has a wife and two children. Fox was about sixty years old and lived in Beahm's Hollow above Kimball.

Riley has retained Mr. Robert F. Leedy to defend him. Preliminary examination has been waived and the case will be presented by the next grand jury.

'Squire Lee Cullers, acting coroner, held an inquest on Monday night, and the verdict of the jury was in accordance with the above facts.

Fox was buried on Wednesday in his father's old grave yard near Mr. John S. Printz's. He was a son of the late David Fox.

Strange Suicide

Mr. W.T. Turner, of Newport, this county, reports to THE COURIER the particulars of a strange death, generally believed to be a suicide, which occurred about two and a half miles northwest of Newport last Thursday evening. George Housden, son of Jas. Housden, aged about 22 years, was found dead on last Friday morning near the foot of the Massanutton mountain. His death was caused by a heavy charge of shot from a single barrel shot gun, the load entering the left breast over the heart and penetrating so far back as to bulge the skin on his back. The gun was found by his side, and also a stick with which it is supposed he pushed the trigger causing the discharge. The young man’s mind had been impaired for sometime, and the day he left home his mother asked where he was going with his gun, when he replied that he “was going out to kill the devil.” All the circumstances point to the fact that the rash act was unquestionably perpetrated by his own hands. Young Housden had been married only about three weeks, his wife being a daughter of Perry Housden.

Shooting in Madison

Last Wednesday night two men, Elliot Finks and John Hurt, both under the inluence of bad liquor, went to the residence of Mr. Siram Kite, who lives near the foot of the Ridge in Madison, and demanded admitance, saying they were in quest of brandy. Mr. K., soon discovered their condition, and refused to admit them. They persisted in their efforts and forced the door open, when Mr. K., who had retired, arose and ordered them out. They left and went to the store room, near by, which they began to stone. Mr. Kite then took his shot gun and went where the men were. A scuffle ensued in which Hurt was shot in the shoulder and breast, from which he died on Saturday. Hurt, our informant says, had hold of the gun when it was discharged, accidentally, as claimed by Kite.

DIED FROM HIS INJURIES

Andrew Nichols died at the Alms House in this county on Monday night of this week from injuries received one day last week, which, according to his version, given to persons in Luray, a day or two before, were received in Jefferson county the latter part of last week at the hands of a colored man who he said struck him and robbed him of his monet, some $16. It is believed that his injuries were the result of a fall from the cars. On Monday he came to Luray in a critical condition, and was taken to the Alms House, where, as above stated, he died the same night. Dr. Hammer, coroner, held an inquest on Tuesday. Nichols, who was 25 or 30 years old, was a son of “Coover” Nichols, the noted Madison county well digger. He had been at work for the last five or six years in the vicinity of Charlestown.

Dr. Hammer reports that the autopsy revealed a large crack in the skull, and that the brain had been seriously injured by the blow. He is of the opinion that his injury was the result of a fall.

MURDER IN MADISON

A Most Cold Blooded Homicide Over a Trivial Matter

What appears to have been a most cold blooded murder is told in a message received from Madison telling of the killing of Sandy Nichols by his father-in-law, Layton Sisk. The homicide occurred in the home of Sisk, near the headwaters of the Rapidan, and in the presence of the female members of the family, and was the outcome of a most trivial quarrel. Sisk started to put some wood on the fire when Nichols told him not to do it. One word followed another, and Sisk walked over and pulling a pistol deliberately placed it at her hear of his son-in-law and pulled the trigger. Death was instantaneous. Sisk made no attempt to escape, and when questioned regarding the tragedy said that he had been insulted twice that day by his victim, and he through he would end the matter at once and for all time. To the coroner he said, describing his action in placing the revolver at the heart of the dead man as he told the story, “I got it at the right place, and I just let her go.” It developed that the men had had trouble over some poisoned fruit trees. Thomas William Price***

Page Courier, Thursday 5 Mar 1896

Murder at Grove Hill!

A dastardly murder was committed at Grove Hill, this county, last Saturday morning, February 29, 1896, about 8 o’clock.

Thomas William Price was shot and killed by a Negro tramp who gave his name as Lewis Johnson.

The circumstances are as follows:

The Negro early on Saturday morning passed by the Gem Furnace where he met Joseph Breeden. He asked Breeden for a chew of tobacco, when Breeden told him he didn’t have any. The negro cursed Breeden and shot at him twice. He then ran. Breeden went to Shenandoah, and engaged Price to assist him in catching the negro. Price armed with a double-barrel shot gun started in the direction of Grove Hill, taking a flank movement through the fields. Breeden took the Railroad track going in the same direction. Price intercepted the negro a few rods north of Grove Hill and marched him back towards Shenandoah. They had passed Grove Hill about two hundred yards, when they saw Breeden coming.

At this point the negro drew his pistol and shot Price twice- once in the mouth and one in the abdomen. After he was shot Price shot twice at the negro, tho as he was running it is not known whether either took effect. The negro fled in the direction of Luray, tho it is reported that he has since been seen in Buena Vista.

Price was carried to Mr. Petty’s store at Grove Hill, where he received surgical attention at the hands of Dr. W.A. Koontz. The shooting was done with a 32-calibre pistol. One ball entered the mouth and came out on the side of the neck, the other entered the abdomen near the navel, lodging in the muscles of the back, and from which latter wound he died about 46 hours afterwards. Dr. Hudson held an inquest when a verdict was rendered in accordance with the above facts.

Price is a son of Gabriel Price, who lives at Ingham. He was about 30 years of age, and leaves a wife and two children.

The negro is short, heavy set and very black.

The community where the crime occurred is, we are informed, greatly excited over the affair, and justly demands that prompt action should be taken to bring the offender to justice.

Was born May 3, 1827, and died December 23, 1908, aged 81 years, 7 months and 20 days. Cause of death, old age and general break down.

Mr. Purdham was married April 5, 1849, to Mary Jenkins, who died March 1, 1882. He was again married in May, 1887, to Nancy Virginia Taylor, who survives him.

He died in the home where he had lived for more than fifty years, and within a mile of the house where he was born.

He leaves a widow, four sons, three daughters, twenty-two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a large number of other relatives and friends; his two oldest sons preceded him to the grave.

For a number of years he was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church, at Old “Zion” and served as the first Elder of that church. Some years ago his connection with that church was severed, but he never fully abandoned his death in the doctrines held by that people.

In his last days he frequently talked on the subject of religion…

About one hour before he died he called all his family who were at home to his beside and told them that the end was near, and he wished to give them all good-bye!…

All his children who are living were with him in his last days, and most of them remained to the end.

The funeral services were conducted at the old home December 25th by Eld. H.W. Herrell, of Richmond, Va., assisted by Eld. T.H. Painter, of Stanleyton, Va., and he was buried in the family graveyard on the hill.

Mr. Frank Seal, who lives at Stony Man, this county, has had six cases of typhoid fever in his family since the first of January. Two of the cases have been treated by Dr. Hammer, of this place, and the other four by Dr. Long. Of the latter one or two are yet quite sick, though with favorable outlook for recovery. Dr. Long says he is unable to locate any cause for the trouble unless it arrives from a well of water on the premises. The origin of this disease is generally due to impure water, and none can be too careful in this regard.

P.S.- Mrs. Seal died on Friday with the disease. She was a daughter of the late Benj. F. Foster, and was about 30 years of age.

Death of a Prominent and Useful Citizen

Mr. George W. Seekford, one of the most prominent citizens of the northern section of this county, and the Supervisor of his District (the Springfield) died suddenly at his home near Cedar Point last Monday night. The announcement of his death early Tuesday morning startled and grieved his many friends in this place. He had retired for the night as well as usual, so far as we have learned, except that he was suffering from an operation for corns performed during the evening preceding by a strolling “Corn doctor”. He had not been in bed a great while, when complaining of the pains in his feet, he arose and walking across the room several times, told his wife to call his sons that he was going to die. Before they could arrive he was dead. We have heard no authentic statement of the cause of his death, tho’ from his full habit we think it not improbable that it was apoplexy. He was about 54 years of age… As a member of the Board of Supervisors he was frequently called to Luray and had made many friends in the town. He had been for a number of years a consistent and zealous member of the Old School Baptist Church at Big Spring…

DEATH OF AN AGED CITIZEN

Mr. Jacob Sours, oen of the oldest citizens of the county- aged about 87 years- died at his home on Dry Run on Wednesday evening, January 30, 1901. Mr. Sours belonged to an old and sturdy German family which moved from Pennsylvania to this county when the land was yet a wilderness. His father, Philip Sours, was born in Germany, emigrated to America, settled in Pennsylvania, as above stated, and aftewards removed to Page, and to the same neighborhood where teh subject of this notice was born. Mr. Sourd always claimed, and we have no doubt that it is true, that he hauled the first wagon load of store goods to Luray that was ever brought here, bringing them from Alexandria. He was buried last Friday, his funeral being preached by Rev. J.N. Stirewalt. He leaves a widow several years his senior and several sons and daughters.

BREECHPIN IN HIS BRAIN

Godfrey Stoneberger, who lives about two miles south of Stanley, in attempting to discharge his gun last Sunday had the breech pin blown into his brains. The piece of steel is about three inches long and about a half inch in diametet. It entered his head above the left eye, burying itself deep in the skull. Stoneberger rode horseback about two miles after the accident and told the surgeon- Dr. Hudson- who removed it, that during the ride he could feel the iron jostle about in his head. The accident occurred about 1 o'clock and Dr. Hudson saw him about 5 o'clock. The pin was deep in the brain cavity, and it was with difficulty removed only by the aid of forceps. A large quantity of the brain matter had oozed out, the man was still conscious when the Doctor left him.

Since the above was written Stoneberger has died, the sad even occurring on Tuesday night about 8 o'clock.

TWO MEN KILLED!

JAMES STONEBERGER AND JOHN RICKARD MEET DEATH

Full and Graphic Account of the Appaling Disaster, Near Rileyville, December 27th

DEAR COURIER:     Never in the history of this community has such an accident occurred as the explosion of the boiler at Mr. John Miller's saw mill, located in the Blue Ridge, about 5 miles east of Compton. The sad affair occurred about 10 o'clock last Thursday morning, December 27th, in which James Stoneberger, the fireman, was instantly killed, and John Rickard, the sawyer, was fatally injured, dying at sundown of the same day.

Mr. John Miller, the owner of the saw-mill and Mr. John W. Devers, the off-bearer, are seriously, though it is hoped and believed, not fatally injured. The condition of the injured men, when we saw them, was such as to render an interview impossible. Mr. Aptil Rickard, a brother of one of the victims, was first on the ground after the accident. Mr. Miller was thrown about 100 feet over the slab pile, resulting in a broken leg, besides being badly scalded. After gaining consciousness, he crawled to the shanty (about 60 yards from where he fell) and made a fire. Dr. R.B. Cullers, of Bentonville, and Dr. Ed. Brumback were summoned, and remained with the wounded men all night, greatly alleviating their suffering.

On Saturday the two dead were buried.

James Stoneberger was a son of the late William Stoneberger, and his mother was a sister of Philip Roberts, Esq., of Rileyville. He leaves a widow and two small children; he was 27 years, 5 months and 13 days old. His funeral was conducted by Rev. J.W. Walter... Immediately after the interment the same congregation assembled at the home of Mr. Rickard, near by, where Mr. Walter preached again...

John Rickard was in the 39th year of his age, and was a son of the late Aptil Rickard, and leaves a widow and six children. He was an old lumberman, and had been with this particular engine and boiler for the last twelve years. The boiler had been in use about 20 years, having been brought here from Pennsylvania by the late John Cole, in the year 1880.

It would seem that every living thing about the mill was doomed. A little dog belonging to one of the employees was blown some distance from the mill and killed.

A very sad and sudden death occurred at Mr. M.V.B. Kite’s mill Friday evening last. Mr. Absalom Taylor, well and in fine spirits, started to the mill and store. While in the mill he fell to the floor and expired, not uttering a word after he fell. Dr. F.P. Koontz called in about that time, examined him, can applied stimulants, but could not revive him. He pronounced the cause of death apoplexy. His wife has been very ill for sometime- her death hourly expected. Perhaps the loss of sleep and anxiety of mind had exhausted him. He was a very industrious man, and leaves twelve children, who depended on him for support, most of them are small, and his widow it is supposed cannot recover… Mr. Taylor was buried on Sunday evening in the presence of a large concourse of friends and neighbors.

RILEYVILLE LETTER

RILEYVILLE, PAGE CO., VA, APRIL 11, 1899

EDITOR COURIER:- Aunt Patsy Ward, of whom mention has often been made in THE COURIER, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Catharine Wood, at Oak Hill last Thursday, April 6, in the 110th year of her age, she having been born in February, 1790, on the plantation known as the old county farm, now owned by Mr. John H. Zirkle and occupied by Frank Griffith, Esq... She remembered when there was not a house in Luray and where Main street is located there was a path leading from the Hawksbill to Mill Run. She said the continued use of the path caused a big gully to wash out, and the first houses of Luray, which were all of logs, were built on either side of the gully, which subsequently became the Main street of the town. She lived in the neighborhood of Luray until she was 70 years of age. The last 40 years of her life was spent in Springfield district. Her son-in-law, William Wood ("Big Billy") was a soldier in the war of 1812, on account of which his widow, with whom Aunt Patsy lived, draws a pension from the U.S. government. She is now nearly 80 years of age. When she was 100 years of age Aunt Patsy was received into the fellowship of the U.B. church by the Rev. J.W. Walter, who also officiated at her funeral... Her death leaves Elias Baily the oldest person in Springfield district. Should Mr. Baily live till next May he will reach the good old age of 105.
