The following information was taken from a copy of the Martz Family Bible. The cover sheet states that it was published by Daniel D. Smith in New York in 1827. Our photocopied sheets do not contain the information concerning who is currently in possession of this old Bible.

The following obituary was placed in the back of the Bible.
Died -- on Friday morning, the 28th of last month, at the residence of his son-in-law, Capt. Hiram MARTZ, of Smith's Creek, Col. Daniel MATTHEWS, formerly of this county, bur more recently of Augusta County, Virginia, in the 63rd or 64th year of his age. He was attacked about twelve months since with a bronchial affliction, which terminated in a pulmonary consumption. He lingered for near twelve months under this malignant disease, and bore his affliction with the utmost fortitude and Christian resignation, and died without a struggle or a groan.
Col. MATTHEWS was a man of unassuming manners, of a strong discriminating mind, and was a useful man in his day, having served his country in several important stations. He was Captain of a company of volunteers during the late war with Great Britain, and served his country for six months in that capacity. He was a member of the Virginia Legislature for two years; was an acting Magistrate of this county for many years, and once filled the office of High Sheriff of the county. The duties of these several situations he discharged with zeal and fidelity, and to the satisfaction of all. But the days of his usefulness are now past. "He has gone to that bourne-from whence no traveler returns" and has left a large circle of acquaintances and friends to mourn their irreparable loss. M.
