Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris

Virginia to wit:

On this 25th day of September 1832 personally appeared before the Court of Halifax County now sitting Edward Henderson a resident of the said County and State aforesaid, aged eighty six years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in Order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. that he entered the Service of the United States in the year 1779, being drafted and marched from the County of Halifax in the State of Virginia in a Company of Militia which was commanded by Capt Peter Rogers and Lieut. Anthony Irby through the State of North Carolina to Stono [Ferry] in the State of South Carolina where I served a tour of five months, I believe in Col. Burwels Regiment but my memory is somewhat impaired and cannot say positively. I was discharged at that place by Capt. William Rogers. the whole time of service rendered on this tour including the time allowed to travel home was upwards of six months. my discharge is lost and cannot be found but the service rendered in this tour is proved by John Jones & Caleb Dodson who were soldiers with me at the same time and in the same Company. In the year 1781 I was drafted in the County of Halifax in the State of Virginia for six months and was ordered to Richmond, and at that place was attached to Capt Moor’s company a very short time  I was then detailed as a wagonner and drove one of the Public teams until my term of six months expired. I then enlisted for during the war and still acted as a wagonner for about eight months, when I was discharged. I do not recollect the name of the officers that I enlisted with nor the name of the officers that discharged me. they were strangers to me at the time, and I have no recollection of them now. my discharge is lost. I have not seen it for many years. Do not know a Person living that was with me in the service at that time. I can refer to the Reverend David Street, Colo Thomas Davenport, Isaac Modley Esq and many others who can testify as to my character for veracity and their belief of my services as a soldier of the Revolution.

I was born in the County of Cumberland in the State of Virginia I suppose in the year 1746 I have no record of my age but know that I am eighty six years old. I lived in the County of Halifax in the State aforesaid when I entered the service of the Revolution. I lived in that County for many years after the war ended then moved to the County of Patrick in the State of Virginia  lived in that County six or seven years then removed to the County of Halifax and live in that County now.

I hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present– and declare that my name is not on the pension Roll of the agency of any State.
