Virginia Franklin County to wit
On the eighth day of May 1833 personally appeared before me Moses Greer a member of the county court of Franklin and duly authorized to administer an oath and take testimony by law John Akers who from bodily infirmity is unable to appear in open Court, born in Buckingham county Virginia and resident in Franklin county Va age seventy five years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make this declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed 7th June 1832 That he entered the service of the United States during the war of the revolution and served under the following named officers in the manner herein after described. That in the county of Buckingham where he then resided he was drafted into a company in the year 1780 into a company of malitia commanded by Captain Anthony Winston, and was marched to Williamsburg and through various counties in the lower parts of Va and at the expiration of three months was discharged– that in the year 1781 he was again drafted into the service in Buckingham Va, into a company of malitia and marched to the borders of the Dismal Swamp in Va. under Captain John Caldwell – and after a service of three months was again discharged & returned home, that in the year Cornwallis surrendered he was drafted in a company of militia in Buckingham Va. and under the command of which I cant state by loss of memory marched to various places and lastly to Yorktown where he joined the main army under his Excellency Genl George Washington That he was present at the seige of York, and capture of Cornwallis – and was attached to a regiment commanded by which I cant state by loss of memory that after a service of three months he was discharged–this applicant [illegible word] was that his whole service during the war of indepence or revolution was nine months and was performed as stated above that from loss of memory produced by bodily infirmity he cannot be more particular than he has been above – That he has lost all his discharges – they being considered by him long since as useless – he has no documentary evidence – but he exhibits the testimony of two credible witnesses–well known in the neighbourhood where they reside to prove his services– This applicant says he is well acquainted with N H Claiborne member of Congress from this district– Colo Thomas Greer of Franklin and the Rev’d Theoderack Webb and many others and to them and each of them he refers for his character – and is persuaded they will sustain his claim to an unblemished name for truth – He has for many years lived in Franklin County Va and still resides there – He is now very infirm and unable to travel thro the country–to hunt up his former companions in arms– during the war of the revolution – He relinquishes all claim to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is on the pension Roll of the agency of any State.
