Pension Application of John Boman (Bowman): S18323

Virginia Patrick County} SC

On this 16th day of January 1834 personally appeared in open Court before the county court of Patrick County now sitting John Boman a resident of the said county of Patrick and State of Virginia aged seventy five years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832

that he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated

that he was drafted in to the service of the United States in the 1781 in the first of October  that he marched from the County of Henry state of Virginia (where he then resided) under Capt James Shelton as a private soldier  was march to Prince Edward Court House where he met several other companies destined for Washington’s Army  He was there placed under the command of Lieut Rice shortly after their arival at this place they received news of the surrender of Lord Cornwallis  They remained stationed at Prince Edward Court House about one[?] months then marched to Richmond the seat of government of the state of Virginia where he was put under the command of Capt Ewel[?] [two or three illegible words] employed in guarding the magazines and prisoners untill his tour of six months had expired when he was discharged by Capt. Ewel from which place he set [word illegible] home

He says he has no documentary evidence of his service and knows of no living witness by whom he can prove his services, that he gave up his discharges to Samuel Staples who was at the time deputy sheriff of the county of Henry who told this declarant that he could draw wages for his services in the Revolution which discharges he has never seen since and that said Staples has since deceased. He also says he was born in the county of Halifax State of Virginia on the 6th day of January 1759  that he resided in the County of Henry State of Virginia when he entered the service  that he remained in that county after the Revolution untill the county was divided and Patrick County taken off  he fell in the County of Patrick where has resided ever since and where he now resides  [several words illegible] does not know who commanded the regiment to which he belonged and that he knew no regular officers

He says he has no record of his age but according to the account given him by his parents he was born as he has above stated

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state

I Aaron Boman of the county of Patrick and state of Virginia do hereby certify that I am sixty four years old and that I well recollect when the above named John Boman (who is my Brother) entered the service of the United States and also recollect his return and that I fully believes he served as he states  I also believes him to be the age he represents  sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid      Aaron his X mark Boman
