Declaration in order to obtain the bene of the act of Congress passed the 7th of June 1832 State of Kentucky Muhlenberg County Sct
On this 27 day of August 1832 before the Judge of the Muhlenberg circuit now sitting Richard D. Reynolds a resident of the county of Muhlenberg & state of Kentucky aged 75 years the 27th day of March last who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress of June the 7th 1832 that he entered the service of the United States as a private under the command of the following named officers (Towit) Abraham Penn Captain Henry Lyons Lieutenant Leonard Terrance Ensign and served as herein stated that on the [blank] day of May 1776 he then being a resident in the County of Pytsylvania [sic: Pittsylvania] in the State of Virginia volunteered under Capt Abraham Penn as afore’d for a tour of three months that he served out his time & was discharged at James Town in August 1776 that this company was never attached to any Regiment that your affiant knows off as believes their business being to guard the magazine & artillery at James Town & does not recollect who paid the company believes they were not paid untill they got home he was in no battle during his service in the year 1777 he was drafted went on a campaign under General Joseph Martin The company was commanded by James Shelton Rickells Blevin Lieutenant ensign not recollected against the Indians on the long Islands of Holstein River [sic: Holston River] for a tour of three months that he served his time out & was honorably discharged in 1778 as well as he now recollects he went on a campaign against the Tories in the State of North Carolina at the Shallow Ford of the Adkin River [sic: Yadkin River] for three months under the command of Peter Haston [sic: Peter Hairston] Captain Lieutenant & Ensign not recollected the company was a ranging or scouting company does not know whether it was attached to any regiment or Battalion he was in no Battle but arrived at the battle ground at the Shallow ford of the Adkin River immediately after the skirmish [14 Oct 1780] the Tories had just retreated he was then discharged did not return home but entered the service again under Captain ____ Caldwell Lieutenant & Ensign not recollected for another Tour of three months under the command of General Rethurford [sic: Griffith Rutherford of the North Carolina Militia] he was in no battle arrived at the Battle ground before the dead was taken up and assisted in burying them at the Battle with the Tories at Ramsours Mill [sic: Ramseur’s Mill, 20 June 1780] that before our arrival at the battle ground we took about 75 of the Tories prisoners. he served out his time & was honorably discharged after he was discharged in the year 1779 as well as he now recollects he volunteered under Captain Peter Haston to guard the prisoners that was taken at the battle of the Eutaw Springs & Cowpens their duty being to guard them from Henry County Virginia to the Albemarle Barracks he was in no battle served out his time & was discharged he states he has lost all his discharges states that he served out each Tour and was honorably discharged he moved from Henry County Virginia to Muhlenberg County Kentucky in December 1805 where he has resided ever since – that some time before he moved Pytsylvania County was divided & Henry County was formed out of part of it [sic: in 1776] leaving your affiant in Henry County he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state sworn to & subscribed the day & year aforesaid [signed] Richard P Reynolds

On this the 26th day of April 1844 Personally appeared before me Robert S. Russell an acting Magistrate in and for the County and State aforesaid Mrs. Nancy Reynolds a resident of this said County of Muhlenburg and State of Kentucky aged about seventy eight years and who after being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed the 7th day of July 1838 Entitled “An act granting half pay and Pensions to certain widows” Towit– that she is the widow of Richard D Reynolds deceased late of the County of Muhlenburg and State aforesaid – and who was a soldier in the Army of the Revolution, and of the Malitia of Virginia, in actual service above one year. He on account of his service in said army was granted a Pension under the act of Congress passed the 7th day of June 1832, at the rate of about $40 per annum. She not being enable to set forth particularly the names of the officers under whom the service of her said husband in the said army was performed, will for their names, ranks, and character of service performed– exact duration &tc, refer to the evidence contained in the papers comprising the matter of his application for the said Pension granted him – and that supported by such other documents as may be on file in the proper Department in the City of Washington.
She further declares that such documentary evidence as she has in favor of her claim she herewith files–which consists of a family Register setting forth the dates of the births of her children &tc. She further declares that she was married to the aforesaid Richard D. Reynolds on the 27th day of March in the year seventeen hundred and eighty five. That her husband the aforesaid Richard D Reynolds died on the 21st day of August 1836, that she was not married to him before he left the service but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January 1794 (viz) at the time above stated – and that she has never married since the death of her said husband but still remains a widow.
