Looking for info on Abraham Moses and son Noah Alexander Moses.
NA Moses
established a mill on Cherrystone Creek near Ragsdale estate about
1867-8.
[He is g-grandfather of Preston Moses, former editor of the Star-Tribune
Newspaper.]
Need birthdates of both, and parent's names of Abraham. Also,
any sibling
info. would be helpful.
We are searching for information about Collins Hampton
(ca1737-1805) m.
(??) and Stephen Hampton (1768-1813) m. Elizabeth Walker (1780-1852).
We believe Collins, the father, and Stephen, the son, were born either
in Pittsylvania or Patrick Co. VA. They moved from VA to NC and
settled
in Surry/Stokes Co. NC.
I need either suggestions or help in attempting to find out what
happened
to my great-grandfather, how he died, etc. I have the following
information only:
David Washington Clayton (nicknamed "King") was born in 1869
in North
Carolina and died on 5-2-1899 in Danville, VA. It is said that
King was
a flagman for the railroad (possibly Southern Railway but not sure
of
this) and that he died as a result of a railroad accident. This
is very
sketchy but it is all the info I have.
If you can suggest to me names or web sites that might could help me
to
look up what caused my great-grandfather's demise, I would surely
appreciate it. I don't even know where he is buried, if indeed
he is
buried somewhere in Danville or surrounding area. I really hope to
see
maybe a newspaper account of this accident and perhaps an obituary,
but
I know to not to "hold my breath". This is one of the few
"missing
links" that I have in attempting to trace my paternal lineage.
Thank
you in advance for any help you can offer! You can reach me at

I need any reference anyone has that includes Raleigh (or Rawley) S.
(Smith?) Craddock. He may be the son
of Samuel Craddock and Elizabeth
Warren, born about 1805 in Pittsylvania County. I located his
marriage
to Frances West, daughter of Joseph West and Catherine McHaney, 6 Sep
1831 in Pittsylvania County, but I have nothing about his parents.
Raleigh (Rawley) and Frances (Fannie) had three children: John Thomas
Craddock, born in 1832 and twins: Joseph William Craddock and Catherine
Ann Frances Craddock, born abt 1834 (1850 census). Raleigh apparently
adopted the name Smith (middle name?) and was found in the 1850 and
1860
census in Halifax County. He is shown as Smith Craddock on the
marriage
certificate of his daughter Catherine, and as Raleigh on the marriage
certificate of his son Joseph William. The marriage certificate
of John
Thomas to Mariah Louise Gravins has not been located.
My great-grandfather (William FLoyd Burks) was married to (Lucy
William Vaden) April 11, 1876 in Pittsylvania County, Va.
They
are buried in a small town, Red Oak at their old home place which is
still standing.
Any information would be appreciated.
I would like any information on Jasper Billings who was listed
in the 1782 census for Pittsylvania Co. Thanks for any help.

I recently unearthed my GGGGrandfather's
(Thompson CARTER) tombstone; on
the tombstone it has that he was born 8 Aug 1808 in Pittsylvania Co.,
VA and
died 5 May 1857 in Madison Co., TN.
Thompson was married in Halifax Co., VA on
13 Feb 1830 to Nancy W.
YANCEY (also thought to have lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA at
one time). I'm
trying to find out information on both Thompson and Nancy's parents.
Any information will be appreciated.

Museville Christian Church Cemetery
I'm trying to find a couple of ancestors living in Pittsylvania County
sometime during 1872-1900, supposely buried in Museville
Christian Church cemetery. I'm having trouble finding anything
on Mary Ann Mcghee who married William Preston Oakeson

(from Franklin County), William's parents were Joab
and Elizabeth Kirby Oakes (from Pittsylvania).
I am trying to join the United Daughters of the Confederacy and I am
stuck right now. So any light you can shed on the
location of the cemetery would be helpful. My understanding of
the court house, they have no one part-time who can help.

I am looking for info on a Thomas Shelton,
b. in Pittsylvania Co. in 1802.
He moved to TN in 1806 with his parents. I am trying to determine
if his
parents were Bennett Shelton and Mary Ausling. Bennett is supposedly
the son
of a Thomas Shelton and Jane Bennett.
The reason that I believe that Thomas b. 1802 may be the son of Bennett
is
that Thomas' second son was named Bennett Lindley Shelton.
Would like to hear from anyone connected to Ulyses Grant Doss
who married
Virginia Frances Brumfield in Pittsylvania Co. VA. They
are my grandparents.
I would like any info on the relatives those two grandparents.

My mother, Edith Frances Overman, was born on 17 March
1917 in Pittsylvania
County to Altson (Alston) Arlendo (Lendo) Overman (April 1877) and
Caroline Augusta Chappel
Overman (1875). The post office on her birth certificate is Sandy
Level. Apparently, they
moved back and forth between Virginia and North Carolina. I have
had great difficulty in
locating my gr-grandparents whom I believe were named David Hatch Overman
and Julianne Freeman
Overman. They don't seem to be included on any census.
Any information on this line would be
greatly appreciated.
I am researching the family of Robert and Martha Tudor, born
circa 1785, in a
portion of Henry County that is now Patrick County, VA. I am
interested in
their ancestry and am posting this message in Pittsylvania County as
the land
now comprising Patrick County used to be a part of Pittsylvania County.
Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
My husband's gr gr grandfather was a James Morton, who was born
in Va in
about 1802. He married twice. Once to a louann Wells in
Jackson Co,
Ala in about 1820. And second to a Susanna Alexander in Jackson
Co,
Ala. In 1830 Alabama Census, James is listed next to an Isaiah
Morton.
On the same page in 1820, Pittsylvania Co, VA, I find an Isaiah Morton
and a David Morton.
In 1830 James and Susanna Morton moved back to KY near her parents
where
another daughter is born to them. From there this Alexander family
and
James Morton and family move to Missouri in 1832/3.
It is said that James Morton's sister was Nancy Morton. She married
an
Alexander and named a son David.
I seek the relationships between David Morton and Isaiah Morton who
appear in the 1820 USCensus. I found a Isaiah Morton's father,
mother,
and siblings in Pittsylvania. I seek relationships between David Morton
and James and Nancy Morton. Was he their father?
Thanks, Wanda Cole

My request may seem somewhat different from that of others doing research
on
their families. You see the family I am trying to find is not
related to me,
nor does the time line go back hundreds of years.
I am trying to help my father, Clyde F. Hancock, find the family of
a fallen
comrade from the Korean War. The young soldiers name was Calvin
C. Grant,
age 24, died 24 April 1951, Killed in Action during the Korean War.
This
young man listed Pittsylvania, VA as his hometown. Soon after
his death his
widow gave birth to a child. My father and another veteran are
trying to
find this family. Calvin C. Grant died in the arms of his friend and
the
memory of that moment has never left that soldiers mind. We realize
that many
years have passed and that the family may have moved on or even be
deceased,
yet this is an endeavor that we must undertake. Any leads or
information on
how to go about finding the names of the widow/children would be greatly
appreciated.
I thank you for taking the time to read this and for your help in this
matter. The friends left behind of Calvin C. Grant thank you.
Please contact me at the above email address or contact my father,
Clyde F.
Hancock, at cfhancock@aol.com.
Again, we thank you!

Pamela Hancock-Ruiz

I am hoping to find some information on Gallant (aka Garland, Garlint)
Ayers/Ayres. Gallant is believed to have been born between 1770-1775
in
Pittsylvania County, VA. He is listed in Surry County NC and in Buncombe
County NC census. His will was Filed in Buncombe County in 1831, and
he
died in Yancey county NC. He paid taxes in Franklin County Ga, in 1807
also. He witnessed the will of Mordica Mendenhall in Guilford County
in
1803. Although I have much info on his descendants, I have been unable
to locate parents or siblings. I believe that he may be the child of
Moses Ayers, and am looking for anyone who can provide information
to
this effect. Old family rumor is that his mother was Cherokee, and
that
is why we can't find information. This is unsubstantiated rumor. Can
anyone out there help? Any information would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
Thanks in advance for anything sent my way!

I am trying to find my
grandparents' ancestors and I live in Scott Depot, West Virginia, about
a 5
hour drive from the area my grandparents were born. I wish it
were closer
because I would be visiting more often. So I am quite often on
the internet
looking for clues, especially your website.
Last fall I was visiting relatives who live in Hurt, Virginia, and decided
to
look for family cemeteries near that area. My family, the Roark
Family, used
to live in a town called Jacobsville, which is no longer a town, and
is close
to Hurt. My gr-gr grandfather, James Edward Roark and his wife,
Tabitha
Shields Roark, operated Roark Mill from about 1880 through about 1920.
I
spotted a cemetery in a field off of Roark Mill Road and discovered
the
graves of my gr-gr aunt and her family. I took pictures of some
of the
tombstones (unfortunately I ran out of film). I didn't know if
you wanted to
list this cemetery since I really don't have good directions to get
there.
(All I can tell you is that we drove down Prospect Road, past New Prospect
Baptist Church, for several miles til the road forks, stay to your
right and
then make a right on Roark Mill Road. Go several miles, not sure
how many,
didn't seem too far though. The cemetery is on a hill top on
the left side
of the road near a large barn. It is easy to spot but you have
to climb a
fence to get to it and the cemetery is also fenced. As you go
down the hill
past the cemetery, Jacobs Road is to your left. If you stay on
Roark Mill
Road, it takes you to Motley.) The next time I visit, I will
try and get
better directions to it.

Greetings from Amelia Island!!
I am searching for some conformation about the birth of my G-grandfather
William L. Pigg (Maybe William
Larkin Pigg). He was born in 1811 in VA, died
in 1885 and is buried in Sevier County, TN.
>From an ancestory chart for William Gregory Richards I find that
a William
Pigg was born in 1811 in Pittsylvania Co, Va. He was the son
of John Pigg
and Polly King. John was the son of Hezekiah Ford Pigg who was
in turn the
son of John Ghent Pigg.
If you could point me in the right direction for me to confirm that
the
William Pigg referred to in this ancestory chart is my William L. Pigg,
I
would forever be grateful.
Thanks...........L. Ray Pigg Amelia Island,

Hi - my name is Janet Fentress and I have just recently started researching
my husband's family. The Bassett genealogy library has been a
wonderful source and a lot of help to me. I thought you might
be interested in what little family history I have gathered on the Owenline
in
Pittsylvania County. My mother-in-law was a Owen before marrying
and her father was born and raised just off what is now Route 40 barely
into Pittsylvania County, very close to Penhook. The census records
list the area as"Pigg River District". The house where he was raised
is
still there although now only used to store tobacco, potatoes, and
junk. Across the road we found the old family cemetary and I will
list our
findings there. It is quite overgrown and probably no one knows
it is there except for a very few. Following is my findings so far
on the family:
William T. Owen - b. June 2, 1821, d. May 13, 1891. married Sarah E.
Gilbert d/o John Gilbert August 21, 1848. (I think the "E" stands for
"Elizabeth" but am not sure) Both are buried in the family cemetary.
They had 8 children of which 4 lived to maturity (1900 census):
John - 1m. 1850 census
E.... b. May 1851
Julia Ann - d. 1856 aged 10 months
William T. - b. Aug 1861, d. Nov. 1861
Walter Jackson - b. Aug. 29, 1865, d. January 16,
1934
baby - b. Nov 28, 1866, d. Nov. 29, 1866
Robert Lee - b. April(?) 28, 1867, d. Sept. 29,
1943 (buried in family cemetary)
my information on the above is obviously fragmented
Walter Jackson Owen - b. August 29, 1865, d. Jan. 16, 1934. married
Sallie Jane "Tommie" Davis July 4, 1889.
They are both buried in the family cemetary.
Sallie Jane was born Oct. 15, 1869 and died Nov. 25, 1941. Her parents
are Thomas Franklin
Davis - b. 10/25/1846, d. Aug. 1869 and Susan Davidson Davis - b. Jan
22, 1846, d. Apr. 9, 1922. They are both buried in the family cemetary.
children of Walter & Sallie:
Lola - b. Apr. 1890
Lena - b. Sept. 1891
Edith Mae - b. May 22, 1892, d. Oct. 14, 1963 (buried in family cemetary)
William Frank - b. Aug 16, 1895, d. July21, 1984 (my husband's grandfather,
buried Roselawn, Martinsville)
Lillian - b. Feb 1899
Claude - b. 1901 or 1902, d. July 1962 (?)
I have more research to do on these children. I know Edith, Lillian
and Claude all died in Pittsylvania County.
Naturally I have extensive information on William (we called him "Daddy
Frank") but he lived his adult life in Franklin County and later Henry
County.
other headstones in the cemetary are as follows:
Sallie B. Owen b. 10/21/1859, d. 9/19/1889; wife of J.A. Davis
John B. Quarles Co.E 6 VA. Cav CSA
Mary B. wife of John B. Qualles (2 different spellings), died with
LaGrippe, b. 6/15/1824, d. 12/16/1891
Joseph C. Drury - b. March 27, 1863, d. June 18, 1891 or 1894
There are also several stones with no writing on them.
I hope this information will be interest to you. I am quite a novice
at all this so am probably not very organized. If you or anyone would
like to
contact me about any of the above my e-mail address is fentress@intelos.net.
Eventually I plan to spend a day in the courthouse as I just live
in Martinsville.

Researching the surname:
POLLEY. My gggrandfather, David Polley was born in Pittsylvania
Co., Virginia abt. 1780. He had two
known brothers, William and James. All three were in Adair Co.,

My grandparents Susan E. (Cole) and Thomas
Edwin Vaughan were married in
Laurel Grove, Va (Pittsylvania County) on November 21, 1888.
Her parents are
listed as A. F. and Lucy Cole. I have no listing for the parents
of my
grandfather. She died in Lunenburg County on March 14, 1930 and
is buried in
Victoria, Va. My grandfather died in Alexandria, Va on March
24, 1948 and is
also buried in Victoria, Va.
Susan was born June 4, 1873 but I do not know where. Thomas was
born October
15, 1860 and I have no birthplace for him either.
I would appreciate hearing from any one that has information that would
help
in tracing this family tree.
I am looking for information in Pittsylvania County VA for early Chaney
and
Burton families. I can trace my Chaney line back to Pulaski
Co KY. Obadiah
Chaney states in records that he was born in VA. He married Elizabeth
?. I
think her maiden name was Burton as they named their first son John
Burton
and there were Burtons in Pulaski Co who migrated from Pittsylvania
Co VA.
In looking at your web site (excellent) I noticed that om 1820 census
there
are two William Burtons and Ezekial and Jacob Chaney. Earlier
records show
Jacob, James and Ezekial Chaey in the county in 1767, and Elisha and
James
Burton in 1782.
Is there anyone researching BURTON or CHANEY families?
Thanks,
Zahn Burdick
I am researching a line from pittsylvania county with the surname of

I've been trying to locate some Fitzgerald
ancestors and wonderd if you might point me in the right direction.
My great-grandfather, William Harrison Fitzgerald, moved from Pittsylvania
county in the 1830s or 1840s with his family,(including his wife, Jane
Calland Fitzgerald, and his father, Walter Fitzgerald). They settled
in
North Mississippi, where the Fitzgerald family flourished for more
than a
century. A few years ago, I met Ed Fitzgerald of Gretna, Virginia (this
is
the younger Ed). We became close friends and figured we must be related,
but
we could not find a "paper trail" proving it. Ed's family descends
from
Edmund Boxley Fitzgerald (born in 1745). The first Edmund Fitzgerald
may
have had a brother named Walter. That is the connection we are trying
to
find.
Have you come across any official documents concerning Edmund, Walter
or
William ?
I hope this question isn't too much of an imposition and will gratefully
anticipate your response.

I am trying to find information about a man who lived in Danville, Va
around 1900. His name was Albert Swann Hudson. I did find an
Albert Hudson in the Greene County Va. 1850 census. That early
Hudson was a school teacher. The Albert Swann Hudson I seek
had a daughter in Danville in 1922 but soon left the area and the mother
never mentioned him again. His daughter is now in her 70's
and trying to learn more about her father. If anyone knows anything
about this Albert Swann Hudson I would like to help her (she is
not an internet user). Thank you, Marie
I am hoping that you may provide me with for an address that I can find

Hezekiah Pigg married Peggy Pams (possibly Parris)
August 1795 in Harrison Co., Kentucky. There was a Hezekiah Pigg

I am seeking information on any William or Thomas Seymour born
in the mid
1800s.
I have a great grandmother by the name of Lelia Redd Seymour born Nov.
30,
1874 and died Jan. 16, 1960. She was born in Cascade, VA and
died in
Rockingham Co, NC - stoneville. Her parents on her death certificate
are
listed as William Seymour and Mary Matthews.
Some believe that Mary Matthews was known as Mary "Mollie" Matthews.
She was
born Aug. 6, 1851 and died Aug. 17, 1933. She is said to be buried
in the
Cascade Cemetery...
Some believe that Lelia's father and Mary's husband was one Thomas
B.
Seymour. I believe this William Seymour and Thomas B. Seymour
are the same
person and would like help finding information on him and his family.
Perhaps the B stood for Billy short for William.... I have no idea.
But I
will go by William Seymour since that is what Lelia's daughter, Gertrude
King, gave as the name of Lelia's father for her death certificate.
I just picked up the info you had submitted to the VA GenWeb on Pittsylvania
Co deaths. I just recently started researching my mother's
family. Her father, Roy Oakes was the
gg grandson of William H Oakes. I was delighted to find the info
from you on Margaet Kirby, daughter
of Daniel and Catherine Oakes. Every bit of info I pick up is one more
piece to the Oakes family tree. Any info you have and would be willing
to
share is most welcome.

I live in Mechanicsville, VA just outside
of Richmond. I did a web search and found my uncle's name listed
under your
website.
His name is Rawley M. Goolsby, Jr. He was killed in WWII
and is burried in
Chatham. I'm looking for family information about the Goolsby's
and the
Bendall's.
My grandfather was Rawley Martin Goolsby and I think he was from Danville.
My grandmother was Ann Bendall Goolsby. My dad, Paul Carter
Goolsby, was
born in Richmond and raised in Danville. The aforementioned family
members
are all deceased. My mom tells me that my grandfather is burried in
Chatham,
where there are also many Paul Goolsby's burried. My aunt was
Nancy Marie
Goolsby Grau and she was very familiar with the family history, but
she is
now deceased. I have visited your site in the past and was unable
to find
any Goolsby or Bendall information. When my uncle's name came
up I was
thrilled. It was the first link to my family I have found.
Thank you for
publishing that. Do you have any suggestions or links to help
me find
Goolsby and Bendall information in the Danville, Pittsylvania or Chatham
areas? Thank you for any information.

Hi, I am trying to locate info on parents of Mumford Sled Taylor
b 1798 in
Pittsylvania Co. and his wife Mildred Shackelford. Both
born in the county
and married there in 1817. His parents were Obadiah Taylor and
Mary Choice

other brothers
also married Shackelford sisters. About mid 1830's these three
couples moved
to Missouri.I would appreciate any info on these families you can give

I am researching The Joseph Austin Family
and Edward Covington Family of Pittsylvania
County. This is a bit of the info I have now . Joseph Austin b. 1730-35
VA married Wealthy Prewit in Nov 1777 in
Pittsylvania Co. I have been told that this couple had a daughter born
before the marriage (1750-1760) named Frances
"Fanny" Prewet who married my 4th Great Grandfather Edward Covington
in April 1777 Pitts. Co. In Oct. 1787 Pittsylvania
Co. Joseph Austin sells to Edmond/Edward Covington ( his son-in-law?)
land on the fork of the Sandy River. Does anyone
know the ancestry of this Edward Covington? Where did Edward live prior
to coming to Pitts. Co.? Did his family move with
the Austins who I understand came from Lunenburg Co.? Edward had a
son named Joseph Covington who was born in Pitts.
Co around 1780 and later moved to Rockingham Co NC. Does anyone know
who he married ca. 1800. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks
COCHRAN, Abner -- listed on the 1767 Pittsylvania
Co. Tax lists. He may be the same Abner Cochran who prepared his
will in Greene Co., GA in 1819. Does anyone know the names of
Abner's parents, with documentation? Some researchers
report that Abner is the son of William/Jemima (Brame) Cochran.
I would enjoy corresponding with anyone connected with
this Cochran family. Liz Sly
EDWARDS / HOPPER / TRAINUM / GILLEY / BROWN
Could use some help with this mystery. Moses EDWARDS aka Moses
HOPPER an illegitimate child born 1762 in
Pittsylvania Co. to a Mr. HOPPER and a Miss EDWARDS per his Rev. War
Pension. He was bound out to a Mr. William
TRAINUM of Pittsylvania Co. under the name Moses EDWARDS. Due
to the harsh treatment he received from Trainum he
ran away and joined the army using the name Hopper. When he left
the army he went to Guilford Co., NC where he had
family...especially an Uncle Charles GILLEY. He resided there
for 30 years and may have married. Ultimately he married a
Mary TWEEDLE and moved to Grayson Co., KY where he spent the rest of
his life. Moses may have had half brothers
Gillium and Raleigh HOPPER...and possibly a Thomas and Absalom HOPPER
as well. It has been suggested that his
mother's name was Elizabeth and that her surname may have been GILLEY...and
that she may have later married a Mr.
BROWN. She may have been the Elizabeth EDWARDS who married a
Samuel BROWN. This is all terrribly confusing and
I'd appreciate any help you can offer. Pls contact me if
you can shed any light on any of these people.
I'm trying to locate information on the parents of Edward Adkins.
He
was married to Mary Frye and they lived in the Chatham during
the late
1700's. He died about 06/19/1826. They had the following
children all born in Pittsylvania County, Va: John m: SarahOwen;
Drury S. m: Susannah Price they moved to Dickson/Houston
County, TN in
1806; Alcy m: William Oakes they moved to Halifac County, VA;
Susannah
m: Jesse T. Carter; Ann m: John Mitchell,
Ann died in
04/03/1868 Pittsylvania County, VA.
There is a possible third son, Abner, I found only a deed indicating
him as a son. This could also be a second name for John, of the
relatives researching I'm the only one with this information on Abner.
Any help on the parents of Edward or any other member would be
appreciated.

I am researching the following Price's from Pittsylvania county;
Thomas Price 1730-1792
Reece Price 1755(b.Pittsyvania Co.) -1830(d. Rockingham county)
If you know anything about this Price line either prior to Thomas' father
Rice or anyone else researching the line I would
appreciate whatever you can give me. I am brand new to geneology.
I wondered if you might have any record of a George Watson
married a Annie
Davis probably before 1892. Thank You, Mary
My father (and I think all the fathers before him) was Henry
Viccellio. I am interested in information on when the Viccellio's
immigrated to Virginia (Chatham) from Italy/Austria.
I have already discovered on the Pittsylvania County web site
that my Great Grandfather (I think) was in the Chatham Grays and may have
participated in Pickett's Charge. I also know, because I have been
there that there are at least 3 Henry Viccellio's buried in Chatham.
My brother, who is also a Henry, said it was really wierd seeing his name
on so many tombstones. Look forward to meeting friends on line.
At least one other family name is Hodges (my grandmother, Minnie Averette).
They are related to the Motley's and I have a copy of the Motley family
history.
Seeking info on Mary Elizabeth Barber. She was born in Pittsylvania
County
Va. on June 15,1860. Her father was John Barber. Mothers name unknown.
She
married
James William Martin. She lived in Staunton,
Va. at the time of her death on
June 10, 1950. She was my great grandmother.
My father's family, both maternal & paternal, were from Pittsylvania
County
from forever as far as I can remember being told! My father was
raised on a
farm near Tightsqueeze just outside of Chatham. Over the years
I have
visited Chatham more times than I can count and have done some helter-skelter
research. Now that almost all my relatives in the area have passed
away, I
am trying to fill in the gaps: too bad we don't pay more attention
when we
are children!
My father's mother was Rebecca C Thomas (married to James H Shields)
and her
parents were George H Thomas and Nancy Owen
(commonly referred to as Nannie
W). I know that George and Nancy were married on 11 Oct 1860
at the house of
Anderson Owen ( Sandy Level area??) who I imagine was her father.
The four
named above are buried in the small private cemetary on the former
Thomas
farm near Whittles, along with numerous now unknown relatives.
George served
as a "Sergeant" in Co D, 57th VA Infantry throughout the Civil War
and was
captured at Five Forks and imprisoned at Point Lookout.
I am attempting to trace the ancestors of Nancy Owen & George H
Thomas. I
think his father may have been William Thomas. I am also interested
in any
information on the 57th and any photos if existant.
Looking for any info on J. Thomas Abbott 53rd

I am trying to find info on my great-grandparents. My ggrandfather was
Robert
Ernest (Ern) Shields. We think he was a mine worker. My ggrandmother
was Cora
Lee Haley. Robert was her first husband. My grandmother was
born in 1904
(Ethel Viola Shields). Robert died in 1914 or 1915. My ggrandmother
remarried
Floyd T. Doss. I knew her as Nanny Doss. She had a son in 1928, Floyd
Lyle
Doss. They were her only two children. She had a brother J.K. Haley
(Uncle
Kel)- I do not know if there were other brothers and sisters. Her father
was
John Haley (9/28/1838- 3/15/1900) and mother was Virginia S. Koesee
or
Koosce. John's father was Charles L. Haley, Sr. (1/21/1803-2/21/1877).
We are
pretty sure he was Irish but do not know if he was born here or in
Ireland.
Nanny Doss told me Robert E. Lee was her third cousin. I am researching
this
possibility as well as any possible connection through my ggrandfather
to
James Shields who owned Shield's Tavern in Williamsburg in the 1770's.
There
probably isn't, but as much as I love Williamsburg and Virginia history,
I
have to try! Thanks for any information you may have.

My name is Jeff Kelley - married to Shari Poor. I've done

1810 but
may have moved to North Carolina before that. George Poore

Surname is Henry, have

to have
reunions every year however, in different places. To this date
the family have printed 2 family books,
consisting of multiple families. But the main families are Fitzgerald;Glass;Henry;Terry.
All originated
here in Pitts. Co. However, I need to find record before 1850
on my great greatgrand parents. Some how
I feel they may have come to Pitts. Co. from another County possibly
Patrick from wherever the
Woodlawn Home of the Henrys were located. Names are Israel and
Fannie Henry. Haven't been by the
Clerks office in a couple years, just getting started again, but when
I find something concrete I'd like to

main (4) families listed above,

Fitzgerald and still haven't

I am seeking any possible information about the family of my grandfather,
James Allison Murphy, born circa 1870 in or around Pittsylvania
County. He
had a sister named Nannie or Nancy two years older than he, and an
aunt and
uncle in Pittsylvania County assumed guardianship when Nancy and James'
parents died. It is not clear if the children moved or the aunt and
uncle
took up residence where the children already lived. My grandfather
ran away
from that home at about the age of 16 when his sister married. He ended
up
in Louisiana where he died in 1926 when my mother was 3 years old.
With so
little information we have been hitting a stone wall for many years.
Any
possible leads will be appreciated.

I am looking for info on my great great grandparents both from
Pittsyvlania County, VA. in the late 1700's or early 1800's.
Their
names are:
J. R. Simpson
Winnie (Bailey) Simpson
The only other info I have is that they migrated to Kentucky around
1830.
My husband's g-grandfather was John Ziegler Ramsey; Born in Pittsylvania
County. Married first Sarah Ann Wright. They had one child,
Esther Elizabeth,
born August 23, 1851. Accounts of John Z. indicate that Sarah died
when
Esther was one year old. He is buried in Grayson County, TX, and his
tombstone has a tribute on the back: Sarah A. wife of J.Z. Ramsey born
Oct 25
1828 Buried in Va. 1852. Entry #91 on the schedule of 1853 deaths lists
Sarah
A. Ramsey, d Mar 20 1853 Consort of J. T? Ramsey. Parents last name
Wight. If
I were betting I would say that this is the Sarah we are looking for.
The
family of John Z. would easily assume 1852 as they had been told that
Esther
was one year old when her Mother died.
Could your "T?" possibly be a "Z"?

record list his mother as Nancy Morris but it doesn't list a father

I am searching for information on John Travis who I believe was
born on
03-15-1768, and died in 1853 in Pittsylvania County. (His wife was

Sarah) I have reason to suspect that he is the father of my
gg-grandfather Ellis E. Travis, born in Pittsylvania County 06-27-1813,
and died in Robertson Co, 08-20-1879.
John Travis and wife Sarah are shown in the 1850 Pittsylvania Co, census
living in the Household of Isaac Travis, who I believe was a brother
of
Ellis Travis.
I also have some evidence that this John Travis might be the son of
a
Champion Travis, who was a member of the Jamestown Travis family.

Thomas MURRY/AY
There was a Thomas Murry/ay in
PIttsylvania Co. on the 1787 tax I believe
and mine "suddenly appeared" in East TN
in 1799. I am looking for a connection.
He may have been married to Susanna
McCargo in VA. If mine, he married
Mary (Polly) Buzby, nee Coulter. Jan.
1800 in Grainger Co., TN.
Am researching Henry Sanders who
married Nancy Love dau to James and Sarah Love of
Pittsylvania Co., Va. Nancy married Henry Sanders Dec 30,
1804. They resided in Va until about 1820 when they moved
west to Kentucky and then moved westward again to Shelby
Co., Ind. in 1825. Henry was born Jan 24, 1776. Am seeking
info on his parents and siblings. Who were James and Sarah
Love's parents and siblings?
I am searching for the parents of Edmund Ferguson, born in Danville
(?) in l800 - married Nancy
Whitehurst of Halifax County in l825. Covington Ferguson of Pittsylvania
County had a son
named Edmund, but the dates seem to be wrong for my Edmund .
I hae searched long and
hard for the parents of my Edmund. His children were Mary, Robert
Bethel, Joseph, Henry
Bedord, Felix and Patsy. The family moved to kentucky about l840.
Can you help? I would be
so grateful.
I am looking for the parents of John Midkiff-wife agnes Parsons-
Bd
approximately 1740--
My name is Charlsie Chapman Gatlin,
I live in Winter Haven Florida. I am trying to undertake family
research, I
was born in LaFollette Tennessee, 1956, we did not stay there.
My brothers
age 2 and 4 almost, were lost
to a house fire there in TN Jan 10, 1956, I was born March 3, 1956,
so her ,
my Mother's parents and siblings,
had moved to Indiana, so she wanted to be near them, so my Dad secured
work
etc, so I know very little, as of November I started to search.
I found
the roots there in LaFollette TN, but there are three elders from VA,
someone else had told me Pittsylvania
Co VA, I do not know that for sure.
Robert Chapman born about 1760-1770, married to an Elizabeth?.
William Chapman born 1770-1780 VA
married to Delilah Spencer? There is
a Thomas born 1780-1790 married to
a Winna or Winne possibly Spoling or
Boling?
They just seem to appear in Tennessee and don't know when they
died etc. The courthouse there has been burned out three times,
but you can
get the census online and I have
looked at it. The three root guys,
I don't know their relationship.
My GGGrandfather is Joel and Margaret Woods Chapman. Their
son Harvey Chapman is my Great
Grandfather. Manda Wells he married.
Kip Chapman from LaFollette TN is
my Grandfather I have supportive docs for this, who Joel's father is
and
mother is my question.
I'm researching the families of Bow/Bowe/Boe and
Richard Thurman who lived
for a while in Pittsylvania Co. before going on to Kentucky.
Have reference to a 1787 Census of Pittsylvania Co.. It mentions
Jemima Boe
and Henry Boe. Where can I find this tax record, or any others
of the same
time period? Thanks,
Sally Byers
I've been trying to locate some Fitzgerald
ancestors and wonderd if you might point me
in the right direction.
My great-grandfather, William Harrison Fitzgerald,
moved from Pittsylvania
county in the 1830s or 1840s with his family,(including
his wife, Jane
Calland Fitzgerald, and his father, Walter
Fitzgerald). They settled in
North Mississippi, where the Fitzgerald family
flourished for more than a
century. A few years ago, I met Ed Fitzgerald
of Gretna, Virginia (this is
the younger Ed). We became close friends and
figured we must be related, but
we could not find a "paper trail" proving
it. Ed's family descends from
Edmund Boxley Fitzgerald (born in 1745).
The first Edmund Fitzgerald may
have had a brother named Walter. That is the
connection we are trying to
find.
Have you come across any official documents
concerning Edmund, Walter or
William ?

I am looking for any information on Faulkners who I know lived
in southwest VA (Wythe/Scott
Co's) between 1790 and 1850. A David Falkner (and spouse Celia Grizzle)
along with David's
sister Mary Falkner (and spouse William Grizzle) moved to IN from Scott
Co. VA c.1835. Born
in Wythe Co in 1811, David Falkner had 21 children by two wives. After
Celia died in 1856, David
married Mary Clark in 1857 in IN. He and his family eventually settled
in Brown Co. TX c.1881. I
know there were Faulkners in Pittsylvania and surrounding counties....which
are quite close to
Wythe Co. I am Hoping someone will have information on this family.
If you are descended
from, know who David's parents were, or have other ancestral information
on this family I would
love to hear from you. Please email me at landswest@juno.com.
I have been trying unsuccessfully to
find the parents of my gggrandfather Edmond M. Craddock. I
found a marriage record in Pittsylvania Co. of his marriage to Elizabeth
Pitts
and
I know a lot about his
children and his migration from VA to TN then to Laclede Co., MO.
But who were his parents??
Edmond was born in VA about 1796 and died 1855 in MO. He and Elizabeth
had 9 children in VA before
moving to TN where they had 5 more children. All these children
apparently went to MO with him since
census records in MO support this. I have not yet found his gravesite
but have found many of his
children in MO. One of his children, Caswell C. Craddock b.1/8/1842
in TN d. 8/4/1876 in MO was my
ggrandfather.
Any help in discovery of the parents of Edmond M. Craddock and his siblings
would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.
I am searching for the parents of Nancy Payne (b. abt 1755) (m.
1774 to
Gabriel Richards in Milton, Caswell, North Carolina).
Nancy and Gabriel resided just over the border in Pittsylvania County,
Virginia, on the Dan River, where they raised their nine children along
with four more from Gabriel's first marriage.
Gabriel's first marriage was to Mary Durrett (m. 18 Jan 1765 in Caroline
County, Virginia). That marriage produced four children before Mary
died
in February 1774.
I've searched through your web site and cannot find any connections.
Are
there any records from this period that have not been put into the
database... but could be researched if I drove down to Pittsylvania
County ?
I am a descindent of Capt. Benjamin Clement.
Last week I was able to go

like to

anyone who is a descident of Capt. Benjamin, especially from the Adam
Clement
line. This is a great site !!!

JACOB BARGER is listed in the 1782 census of Pittsylvania County
with 6 persons. Does
anyone know who the 6 are?
He was born in Germany in 1749 and participated in the Revolutionary
War as a wagoneer for
G.Washington. Could Jacob be the father of Philip Barger born 6 Jan.1777?
Does anyone have
any information? Bob Barger
Does anyone have any information on a TABITHA DOVE, TABITHA BIBY,
TABITHA BIBEE,
TABITHA BYBEE???Also a WASHINGTON BYBEE??? I think Washington
BYBEE may have been
from CAMPBELL CO. TABITHA DOVE was born around 1845 in Pittsylvania
and her mother may have
been NANCY DOVE. I know that TABITHA BIBEE'S "Death Certificate"
says she died on 2/4//1916
and that her father was JOE BIBEE and that she was buried in Pittsylvania
Co. on the KEESEE FARM.
When TABITHA was 16 she lived with the HENRY HAGOOD family
as a housekeeper. TABITHA had
a son JOSEPH HENRY BIBEE born 1/24/1884 in Pittsylvania Co. and his
father is listed as
WASHINGTON BYBEE. She also had a daughter, Arthear (Alice) and
a son RALEIGH BIBEE,,born
6/1873. RALEIGH died in Sycamore, Va on 10/29/1935. His
parents on his "Death Certificate" are listed
as Joe & Tabitha BIBEE. His wife was ANNIE DALTON BIBEE.
It seems as MS TABITHA changed
names like people change hats but maybe someone can give us some information.
Thanks, Noellie

Would appreciate any help regarding the following: " CHARLES MATLOCK
had a
survey made on his land in Pittsylvania Co., Va. on May 19,1786:
One survey
of 150 acres for Charles Matlock by JOSHUA STONE. "Two of his
children were:
Susannah H. and Charles. "
Has anyone ever seen such a record? Does anyone know anything
about a
Charles Matlock in Pittsylvania County or his children ie a Charles
or
Susannah H.? Could anyone suggest where this information may
be found
regarding a survey?
Also is anyone familiar with a suit regarding the daughter of Charles
Medlock
whose name was "Susannah" in which she refers to her grandfather Lt.
Col.
Charles Medlock? Is or was there a Henry and Karenhoppach Sanford
Medlock in
Pittsylvania County in the 1700s?
Would surely be pleased if anyone could help me find this information
or
suggest where it could be found. I am searching for Medlock/Matlock
relatives, with some often conflicting names. Thank you very
much. MJ

The research was done another family member. I have only what they
did. I plan on connecting our
family to the Power family of Ireland. It looks like a rough road ahead.
Another family that I am
connected to that's not on that list is John Fitzpatrick. I
am related via Jesse Mae Carr Power my

Fitzpatrick I would greatly
appreciate it.

My g-g-g-grandfather was Joseph A. Covington of Pittsylvania
County, Va. He
was born about 1778 in Va and is believed to be the son of Edward (Edmond)
Covington and Fanny Pruitt (daughter of Wealthy Pruitt and Joseph
Austin)
who married there in 1777. I have believed that Joseph was named
after
Joseph Austin and the A in his name may stand for "Austin" - no proof!
Joseph Covington is found in the Pittsylvania County census up to 1810,
then
he is found in the Rockingham County, NC census in 1820. He is
next door to
Mary Covington, widow of John Covington who died in 1817 in Rockingham
County.
Do you have any knowledge of any of these Covingtons or Austins?
I have
never been able to find the name of Joseph's first wife who would be
my
g-g-g-grandmother; he married a second wife (Elizabeth Hudnall) in
1833.

I am trying to locate any information on an
Absolom Nunnelee(or similer
spelling),married to Patsy Motley on september 11, 1811. I have
strong reason
to believe that I am a direct descendant of them. I can trace my tree
back to
a William Nunley b. july 15, 1815. I have a deed mentioning an Absolom
Nunley
in it as being his former property. I also find a Patsy Nunley on an
1838 tax
list, and I think she is Absolom's widow. I live in the northeast corner
of
KY as did the persons listed above, so I have been able to visit every
courthouse in the area in which they lived. If I can make this
connection(William being Absolom's son) this will be of a great help,
as I
have been trying to locate William's parents for 12yrs.

I am researching the Chocklett family from Pittsylvania Co. I
have info on 2
lines of Chockletts that lead back to Pittsylvania Co. Both have ties
to
Roanoke Co. also.
I know they connect but haven't been able to connect them yet. My ggrand
mother was a Mary Roberta Chocklett from Bedford. Her father was a
Henry A.
Chocklett from Pittsylvania Co. He was born 1838-1845 and died 3/23/1910.
He
married Jane Meador in 1860 and then married her sister 30 years
later. He
served in Company I
58th Regiment, Early's Brigade in the Civil War.
The other family of Chockletts is the family of Jesse A. Chocklett.
He
married Margret
Keesee. They had 10 children. One died at age 18 months. the
other children
were Jesse, Margret, Mayme, Andrew, Minnie Mattye, Marion, Katheryn,
and
Avery.
Jesse served in the Civil War also. He was in Company H 3rd Va. Reserves.
There also is record of a 3rd Chocklett, John Chocklett died from measles
during the war. He was a member of Company I Va 58th Infantry before
being
captured. He died as a prisoner of war.
I feel that all 3 are brothers and possibly the children of John Chocklett.
Do you have any info on any of these Chockletts?

My ggg grandfather Pearce Gwynn was in Patrick co. when it was
formed in
1791 and was at least 60 yrs. of age at that time. Since Patrick
at one
time was part of Pittsylvania I saw the 1767 tithables list with Pyerce
Guinn, jas.Guinn, and George H. Gwin shown. I was wondering if
they were
brothers,? and ANY info on this family. I have searched for years
and
just recently discovered Pearce. I was also recently told this
family
originally came from Perquimans county, N.C. and I did find a Jno Gwin
on that 1713 tax list. Would greatly appreciate any info. thanks.
