MARTHA "PATSY" CARTER wed William Colley 30May1816 in Pittsylvania Co.
My question concerns the parents of Martha Carter (b. abt 1798.)  On the
marriage license, CHARLES E. CARTER states he is her father.  From the
book THE CARTER FAMILY I found Charles E. Carter was the son of George
Carter. George Carter was b. 1730 in Lancaster Co and later moved to
Halifax County.  Their stay was short there because they then moved to
Pittsylvania County.  I had all this in place and felt I was on the
right track, until I heard from a CARTER researcher that CHARLES EWELL
was the son of George Carter and had apparently left a will.  MARTHA
CARTER was not included in the will, nor did there seem to be a time in
which could have been born, since all the years were more or less taken
with other children.
Can anyone tell me if there were two CHARLES CARTERS in the county
during the later part of the 1700s and the 1800s.  If so, would they be
CHARLES E. CARTER AND CHARLES EWELL CARTER.  If there was two different
people, can anyone tell me the name of the childrern of CHARLES E.
CARTER.  This is confusing I know, but if anyone has a clue, an E-Mail
might further clarify it.  Thank you

I am researching the background of Ex Parte Virginia, a U.S. Supreme
Court case, dealing with a Judge Coles, who presided over the
Pittsylvania County Courthouse in the 1870's.

In celebration of this court case, I understand that the Pittsylvania
County Courthouse was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Back in the 1870's, Judge Coles was indicted in Federal District Court
for not assigning persons of color to the jury pool.  Before the case
went to trial, he challenged the validity of the indictment before the
U.S.Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court upheld the validity of the indictment, leaving Judge
Coles in jail awaiting trial.

I am interested in finding out what happened to Judge Coles.

Did he stand trial? Was he convicted?  Did he serve time in prison?  Did
he return to the bench at the Pittsylvania County Courthouse?

I wonder if you have any information in this regard.  If so, I would be
grateful if you could let me know.

Do you know anyone who has a copy of the roster for the 38th VA
Infantry, Co. "K"? I'm pretty certain that my 2nd Great Grandfather,
William Nelson Adams, and possibly his son, William R. Adams, served in
Co. "K" of the 38th. The "Roster of Confederate Soldiers" shows a
William N. and a William R. Adams both serving in Co. "K"  of the 38th
as well as a Robert C. Fortune who was living in the same houehold with
my G-G-Grandparents in the 1860 census. My 2nd Great Grandmother's name
was Ann E. Adams and their address was the Cascade post office. They
were originally from Nelson County, VA. According to the book
"Pittsylvania County Deaths", they had a son named Thomas C. Adams who
died at age seven months in 1865. The 1860 census index also shows three
other men named William Adams in Pittsylvania Co. and I need to
eliminate them in order to be certain that the William N. Adams who was
in Co. "K" of the 38th was my ancestor. I would appreciate any help you
might be able to provide.

My HODGES family line in Virginia starts with William Hodges and Susannah
Gilbert whose son Welcome William was born in VA abt 1710.  His son William
W. Hodges (b. abt 1756) is on the 1776 tithables list in Pittsylvania County
taken by John Wilson.  My information on him is that he married about 1780 to
Martha unk and had 7 sons:  Benjamin (my line), Samuel, Jesse, Thomas, John
Pleasant, William and David (born between 1780 and 1790).  William died in
1813 in Harrodsburg KY, where he moved in 1809 or earlier.  I have
information on some of the siblings, children, and spouses that I will share
with anyone who is interested.  I would like to find out Martha's maiden
name, which of the other Hodges in the area are his brother's (Benjamin and
Jesse) children, and which are perhaps his uncles and aunts.  For example
Nancy Jain/Jane Hodges (B. 3 Oct 1821 and m. 21 June 1847 to Daniel W.
Love---mentioned in the Daniel Webster Love Family Bible at this site) could
be the grandaughter of William's brother Benjamin.  I'm also interested in
the families that moved on to KY and INdiana, since at least one of the
Hodges boys in Indiana married into a family that could have come from
Pittsylvania, Nancy C. Reed (b 1812).

the JUSTICE family in Pittsylvania and Halifax counties? Can you put me in touch
with anyone who has researched the name in Pittsylvania County?  John  and Mary
Hogue Justice arrived in Halifax County in 1754.  Their mostly grown children that came
with them were John JR, Simeon, Ezra, Thomas, William, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary. I
would like to obtain information on this family.  They settled on Harpin Creek where it runs
into the Pigg River. They built a grist mill there. Ezra sold the mill in 1779.  Any help at

I am looking for any information on John L. Spencer. We have been told that John L. Spencer came over to South Boston VA. some time after the Civil War. He came from England where he was the Duke of Marlborough. In England he had the name of John L. Spencer-Churchill but was thrown out of the House of Lords for marrying a commonor named Mary Daniels. When he left England he had to drop the Churchill from hs name. From South Boston Va. he went to live In Danville Va. where we are told that he was the Chief of Police. In Danville Mary and John had a son, Benjamin Lee Spencer on Feb. 1st 1890. John is buried somewhere in Danville. Benjamin Lee is buried at Gilford Memorial Park somewhere between Greensboro and Highpoint N.C. If anyone has any information or knows where else we should look we would appreciate the help.
