I am seeking information on Marion Lucinda Ramsey Shelton b. 1873  d.
aprox. 1945.
She was the wife of John Henry Shelton (1870-1963) son of Tazewell Henry
Shelton (b.1834).  My dates may be off by a year or so.  My information is
that J.H. was born 1874, but his son told me that he was born in 1870.  He
also gave me the dates for Marion.  Marion was the daughter of Ben Ramsey
and Lucy Angle Ramsey. (Lucy had brothers named Jim and Pete.  Her mother's
maiden name was Ziglar.)  Some of Marion's siblings were: Abner, Charlie,
Jake, Tom, Roy, Isaiah, Tilla, and "Aunt Sis".

The parents of Mildred WARD (d. 1824), mother of Edward Joel DILLARD, were
Capt. William Ward (b. 1745), brother of Anne Ward, and Mildred ADAMS (d.
23rd Aug. 1794 ?), daughter of Robert ADAMS and Penelope LYNCH, a sister of
Col. Charles LYNCH (m. Sarah CLARK (?), a Quaker).  One of Mildred ADAMS'
brothers was Charles Lynch ADAMS, Sr, JP.  Penelope's nephew John LYNCH,
son of Charles, established a ferry service on the James River in 1757 on
property owned by his father, to simplify fording.  This became known as
Lynch's Ferry.  In late 1784 John Lynch petitioned the General Assembly of
Virginia for a town charter, and in October, 1786, the charter was granted,
founding the town of Lynchburg, VA.  The siblings of Mildred WARD, were
Robert (m. Elizabeth "Betsy" TERRELL), John (m. Tabitha WALDEN) and Sally
(m. Samuel, son of John SMITH). Capt. William WARD owned "a larged property
[in the northern part of Pittsylvania Co. on Staunton River] and was active
in the life of the county, serving as a justice of the peace, member of the
Committee of Safety in 1775, captain of the militia, and sheriff of the

The ancestry of Mary Lee DILLARD is as follows.  Her father, Americus
Vespucius (b. 3rd August 1850 in Pittsylvania Co., d. 1917), m. Joannah
"Anna" Richards MARTIN (b. 16th Feb. 1855 in Halifax Co., d. 8th Dec. 1936
in Pittsylvania Co.), daughter of Joel G. MARTIN (b. early 1820s, based on
photograph of him in Confederate uniform) and Annie ABBOTT (m. 31st Dec.
1838 in Halifax Co.).  Annie's surname is based on VTW's record of
Johanna's mother's given name and a Halifax Co. record of a marriage
between a Joel DILLARD and an Annie of the expected date; independent
confirmation has not yet been obtained.  Joel, father of Joannah, may well
have married more than once.  The parents of Americus were Edward Joel (b.
6th June 1823, m. 8th Sept. 1849, d. 11th June 1902 [?], all in
Pittsylvania Co.) and Sarah KING (b. 28th Sept. 1826, d. 11th June 1902
[?]), daughter of James KING (b. 1804, m. 9th Jan. 1824 in Pittsylvania
Co., d. Feb. 1881) and Obedience EAST (b. ca 1809 in Pittsylvania Co.).
Obedience was a daughter of Ezekiel EAST (b. ca 1773, m2. 5th Nov. 1797 in

Lima).  The other children of this family are Sarah, Thomas, Wesley, Agnes,

My siblings and I are trying
to locate the family or ancestors of my father,
PERCY EDWARD HOOD who was born around
Dec 17, 1915, to a woman named LOIS ADKINS
that we have reason to believe resided in the Level
Run area of Pittsylvania County. His father was
NICHOLAS VONDERHURST (spelling unsure).
We do not know if his parents had been married. Our
father was adopted by SLYVANUS I. and MARY
MARIE HOOD. We have been looking for
information, but so far this is about all we have found.
We have just recently learned of the history of the
Melungeons in the Virginia area and believe that the
destruction of records is somewhat to blame for our
inability to uncover any facts about our grandparents.
We believe that our grandmother was born in the
very late 1800s or early 1900s. We think that she may
have eventually married a man named POTTER. My
father met her once as a young man and told us that
she had red hair. But he never shared much more
information before he died in 1989. We assumed he
was ashamed of being born out of wedlock, but
perhaps he was also ashamed, unfortunately, of his
heritage ... we do not know. But we are very much
interested in possibly locating records on our
grandparents and finding out whether we may have,
finally, a history on our father's side. There is also the
possibility that LOIS had brothers or sisters, or that
she may even have had other children, which would
mean that we may have aunts, uncles and cousins. It
would be nice to know. If you have any information
that you could share, we would be most appreciative.

Thank you for your attention and response,

wondering if there was a way to see if someone had an index to the wills of
around the time of 1773.  I descended from Samuel Davis (wife - Sarah ?).
Samuel Davis died by Nov. 25, 1773 in Pittslvania Co. Va. I know there is a
will but I don't know any more then that.  I descended from Samuel and
Sarah Davis through their daughter, Wilmuth Davis, who married Michael
Gilbert(also from Pittsylvania Co. and fought in the Revolution).  They had

were married @1773.  Wilmuth was born April 19, 1750 in Pittsylvania,
Co.,Va. I don't know who her brothers and sisters were or if she had any.
What I really need is the will of Samuel Davis if it is possible.  If you
have the time, could you please either help me or direct me to the right
source.  Thank you.

BLAKELY/BLEAKLEY/BLAKEY of Pittsylvania County:

I am researching the family of James BLAKELY (1730 - 1799) whose will,
according to an old Blakely Journal, mentioned the following children:

John who m. Jean SHIELDS  in Pittsylvania Co 1783; Lucy who m. John MORTON;
Mary "Polly" who m. William LOGAN
James who m. Eliza SMITH 12 Jan 1791 in Pittsylvanis Co.; Charles who m.
Sally TURTLE/TUTTLE  1797 in Pittsylvania Co.; Rebecca who m. George WARD
28 Feb 1793 in Pittsylvania Co.; Thomas who m. Rebecca WARD in 6 Dec 1796
in Pittsylvania Co; and Benjamin who m. Virginia Rachel THOMAS.

If anyone has access to this will and/or probate I'd like to know.
Secondly, I descend from James's purported son Thomas who m. Rebecca WARD.
Does anyone know who Rebecca's parents were?   Thomas and Rebecca had the
following children that I can glean:   James b. 1797 in Pittsylvania Co.,
VA m. Jane TYE in KNox Co. KY; Mary Ann "Polly" b. 1799 in VA m. Elijah
FOLEY in Knox Co. KY; Charles b. 1800 m. Martha CHESTNUT in Knox Co. KY;
Lucinda b. 1802 in VA m. William COX in Knox Co. VA; Thomas m. Patience
CHESTNUT (dau. of Abraham) in Knox Co. KY; John Wesley m. Susan DAVIS; and
Pleasant m. Nancy GIRDNER prob. in Missouri.

Thomas and Rebecca (Ward) BLAKELY seem to have moved between 1803 and 1805
to KY.  Most of their children settled in Daviess and Buchanan counties, in
Missouri between 1830 and 1840.   I would like to correspond with anyone

County VA.   First Blakely I have is James b. abt 1730 (WHERE?) who d. in
1799 in Pittsylvania County, but I have no source for that, and would love

IGI has some children born in Lunenburg Co., before coming to Pittsylvania.
Children:  John m. Jean SHIELDS; Lucy m. John MORTON; Mary "Polly" m.
William LOGAN; James Jr., m. Elizabeth SMITH; Charles m. Sally TURTLE;
Rebecca m. George WARD; Thomas m. Rebecca WARD' and Benjamin (not in
Pittsylvania Co.) m. Virginia Rachel THOMAS.

Particular interest in Thomas Blakely who m. Rebecca WARD 6 Dec 1796 in
Pittsylvania Co.   They moved to Knox County KY in early 1800s.   I find
Thomas listed in 1820 and 1830 Knox Co. census, hope to find someone on
this page that knows when and where (Knox Co.?) that Thomas died.    Also
would welcome any info on parents of Rebecca WARD.

SHELTON/CHILTON.  Seeking descendants of Thomas Shelton Jr. (26 May 1763 VA -
20 Aug 1857 Brandon, Miss.; dates from family monument) who raised and married
off his children in Pittsylvania County, and named 12 of them in his will: (1)
Frances Shelton who married ___ SEYMOUR, (2) Martha "Betsy" Shelton who
married Edmund GARDNER and settled in Hart Co., Ky., (3) Nancy Shelton who

ARMISTEAD and settled in Rankin Co., Miss., (5) Sarah "Sallie" Shelton who

Shelton who married James Henry HODGES and settled in Hart Co., Ky., (7)
Theopholis Q. Shelton who married Elizabeth P. DUNN and probably settled in
Hart Co., Ky., (8) Phoebe M. Shelton who married ___ PARISH, (9) Susan H.
Shelton who married WILLIAM ESTES, (10) Henry Featherstone Shelton who married
Mary D. WILLIAMS, then Laura A. P. MOSS, then Martha W. Williams and settled
in Rankin Co., Miss.; (11) Tarmissa Shelton who married ____ YOUNG, and (12)
Harriet Shelton who married Robert MAXEY and settled in Rankin Co., Ky. Family
lore says this Thomas, Jr. married three times, had 13 children of his own and
raised 23 children, and that the surname was originally spelled Chilton. Does
anyone have good [not from D.A.R.] information on any of  this man's wives?
His father most likely was the Thomas Shelton whose dates "1742 - 1846,
American Revolution, 1777 - 1781 1st Lt. VA." appear with those of Thomas
Shelton, Jr. on the family monument at Brandon, and not the Thomas Shelton who
died in 1808 in Pittsylvania Co., Va., as D.A.R. records now have it.  Was
Thomas d. 1808 the grandfather of Thomas d. 1857? Early D.A.R. applications
named Jane CLOPTON as a wife of Thomas d. 1857, and a granddaughter of that
Thomas was named SusanClopton Mustain. Did one of these Thomas Sheltons marry
a Clopton girl? NB: These Pittsylvania Co. Shelton/Chiltons are not identified
in April Miller's book, Shelton Country.  Susan A. Henderson, 555 Ash Street,

I have only been working on my family tree this year. Most of the
information that I have came from my mother who passed away several
years ago. From her notes i find that my great great grandfather,
Henry Westbrook, was born Feb. 27,1773 in Pittsylvania County, Va. He
mirgated to Barnwell Dist. S.C. where he married Mildred Anne Smith
daughter of John Smith and Sarah Smith.  According to her notes
Henry's father was also named Henry.  He was a Revolutionary War
soldier (4th Continental Line) .  He had a brother , Allen Westbrook,
who fought on the 6th C. L..  My mother has also noted that according
to other census records 1782 that Henry had 6 dependents one of whom
was the Henry that migrated to S.C.Although my mother had a good deal
of information on our family, she did not keep references to where the
information came from.

John Smith died in 1799 leaving his wife Sarah , a married daughter
Mildred Anne Smith Westbrook. a son Edmund Smith, 3 minor children
Harriett, Pamela and Matilda.
His widow,Sarah, administered his estate aconsisting of land, personal
property and slaves until 1801, when she married Andrew Gray

Henry Westbrook with his wife and children along with Edmund Smith ,
Sarah Smith Gray and her children came to Mississippi in 1810. They
settled in Amite County , MS.

Henry and Mildred had 13 children one of whom was my great
grandfather,Edmund Smith Westbrook.Henry died in Amite County on Jan.
8, 1845 and Mildred died there on Nov. 17,1859.

I have also been told that my gg grandfathers  father was named
Thomas. I would like any information that I can get on the Westbrooks.
