I am seeking information on Walter GUILL also listed in the Pittsylvania
Co. Deed Bool as GULL and GUILD. On Page 183 of the P D Book he appears
as a Witness to the transfer of property from William HARRISON to Ann
BURTON.
On Page 183 He is witness to transfer of property from William HARRISON
to William BURTON.
And on page 185 to transfer of property from William HARRISON to Josuah
BURTON. All occuring in Oct of 1794

I have an earlier record for him from Prince Edward Co. where he is
involved in a lawsuit to secure the freedom of Deborah PAYNE(aka Jenny)
who was sold to GUILL but claimed to be a "Free Neagro" from Maryland.
It appears that Walter had her file the suit and that he then recovered
cost from Thomas Leversey who initially sold her to a DAVENPORT, etc.

  William James Simon
was born circa 1879 or 1880.  He married Mamie Pearl Bethel
(spouse 1) and they had 8 children: William "Willie,"
Vivian, Clarabell, Ruth, Roland (my paternal grandfather),
Moses, Clyde, and Richard.  My father (Norman E. Simon)
tells me that my great-grandmother Mamie died during
childbirth having Richard.  Also, my great grandfather
William served in the U.S. Army in 1900 and was stationed
in the Phillipine Islands.  In 1910, he was back in Danville
as a 30 yo living @ 320 Calvary St.  In the 1910 census it
states that he owned his house "free and clear," was
employed as an "insurance agent," and that Mamie Simon
was a "school teacher" in the public school system. He
was also a Minister at High St. Baptist Church.
Subsequently after my g-grandmother Mamie died, Wm J.
re-married Daisy Epperson.  He preceded her in death (I
don't know his death date) and she died in Aug 1972.  Her
last residence at the time of death according to the SS
Death Index was a place (or street name) called Cascade,
Pittsylvania County, VA.

I am researching the ancestors of Nancy Stanley (Standley) who was born
in Pittsylvania Co., Va, January 5, 1782.  She married first a Billy
Condry (Condray).  I have seen several different spellings of this.
Billy was killed in an Indian massacre and Nancy then married Josiah
Smith Sr. also born in Pittsylvania Co., Va, on December 9, 1789.
Josiah is the son of Harbert Smith, born in Brunswick Co., Va who later
moved to Marshall Co., Alabama.  Josiah and Nancy lived and died in
Grainger Co. (now Union Co.) Tennessee.  Harbert's father was William
Smith, also of Brunswick Co., Va.  If anyone knows anything about the
Stanley's, the Smith's or the Condry's, please let me know.  I also have
some further information on the Smith's, which I will share with anyone

I have been trying to locate the death certificate of a "Frances Smith"
(woman) who died in Pittsylvania County in 1931-1934.  She was the wife
of William Smith and is buried in Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, NC.
She was living with a married daughter in Pittsylvania when she died.
The funeral home in Reidsville has no record of a funeral then.  Also
the Richmond Vital Records (a pain in the behind office to deal with)
says they have no death record for a Frances Smith.

Can you help me out?  She married William in Surry County, NC in 1893
but began having children with him in 1871 while he was married to a
Sarah ?.

I was told Frances was "given" to William by a Robert Payne of Stokes
County in 1871.  When their children were grown, they moved from Surry
County, NC to Pittsylvania County, so I am ASSUMING William may have
originally been from Pittsylvania.  I have not found his parents.  I do

Looking for information reference American Indians in Pittsylvania
County
and their descendents.   Pittsylvania County was bordered by several
American Indian tribes at one time: the Tutelo, Occaneechi, Saponi,
Monacan and the Cherokee.  Many of the Indians left the area in the late
1700's and it is speculated that some may have joined other tribes in
North Carolina and many may have stayed behind assimilating into the
local populations.    Looking for descendents of Moses Riddle, Indian
listed on the first tithables 1767 for Pittsylvania County.

I would also like to know the names of the children if any of
Suffiah/Sythe GOINGS who marries William CARTER in Pittsylvania County,
January 27, 1792, according to the Pittsylvania County Marriages
1706-1850, William Williams Surety.

Burwell GOING marries Martha CARTER, August 9, 1833, bondsman Frederick
Bruce, married by Ebin Angel.

William GOING marries Susan Bruce, August 1821, signer of certificate
Anna GOING (mother groom) Thomas Bruce (father groom)

Claiborn GOING marries Elizabeth BIRD, 1833 (Rockingham Co., N.C.)
listed in Henry County 1840-Pittsylvania County 1850.  I believe
Claiborn is the brother of Burwell GOING.

The will of Sharack GOING page 80,81 dtd 4 June 1805
lists five sons: John GOING, David Smith GOING,Claiborn Going, Solomon
GOING, Shadrack and Caleb GOING) Daughters: daughter of Edmund BOWLIN?
Hannah BEAZLEY Executor Willam CARTER, Wim BERGER,   Ret Dec 1805.

There were atleast three Claiborn Goings--the sons of earlier Goings
brothers--I am not sure where the Pittsylvania County Claiborn fits
in.

Any  leads to the Pittsylvania County GOINGS/GOINS/GOWING/GOWEN/GOWANS
would be very appreciated, I believe they were American Indian/Melungeon
with connections to Rockingham Co., North Carolina.  Many of the
individuals above were enumerated as Free Persons of Color/Mulatto etc
as were most American Indians in the state of VA.

SHELTON/CHILTON.  Seeking descendants of Thomas Shelton Jr. (26 May 1763 VA -
20 Aug 1857 Brandon, Miss.; dates from family monument) who raised and married
off his children in Pittsylvania County, and named 12 of them in his will: (1)
Frances Shelton who married ___ SEYMOUR, (2) Martha "Betsy" Shelton who
married Edmund GARDNER and settled in Hart Co., Ky., (3) Nancy Shelton who
married Joseph CHANEY, (4) William H. Shelton who married Elizabeth A.
ARMISTEAD and settled in Rankin Co., Miss., (5) Sarah "Sallie" Shelton who
married James W. MUSTAIN and settled in Barren Co., Ky., (6) Lucinda "Lucy"
Shelton who married James Henry HODGES and settled in Hart Co., Ky., (7)
Theopholis Q. Shelton who married Elizabeth P. DUNN and probably settled in
Hart Co., Ky., (8) Phoebe M. Shelton who married ___ PARISH, (9) Susan H.
Shelton who married WILLIAM ESTES, (10) Henry Featherstone Shelton who married
Mary D. WILLIAMS, then Laura A. P. MOSS, then Martha W. Williams and settled
in Rankin Co., Miss.; (11) Tarmissa Shelton who married ____ YOUNG, and (12)
Harriet Shelton who married Robert MAXEY and settled in Rankin Co., Ky. Family
lore says this Thomas, Jr. married three times, had 13 children of his own and
raised 23 children, and that the surname was originally spelled Chilton. Does
anyone have good [not from D.A.R.] information on any of  this man's wives?
His father most likely was the Thomas Shelton whose dates "1742 - 1846,
American Revolution, 1777 - 1781 1st Lt. VA." appear with those of Thomas
Shelton, Jr. on the family monument at Brandon, and not the Thomas Shelton who
died in 1808 in Pittsylvania Co., Va., as D.A.R. records now have it.  Was
Thomas d. 1808 the grandfather of Thomas d. 1857? Early D.A.R. applications
named Jane CLOPTON as a wife of Thomas d. 1857, and a granddaughter of that
Thomas was named SusanClopton Mustain. Did one of these Thomas Sheltons marry
a Clopton girl? NB: These Pittsylvania Co. Shelton/Chiltons are not identified
in April Miller's book, Shelton Country.  Susan A. Henderson, 555 Ash Street,

I have only been working on my family tree this year. Most of the
information that I have came from my mother who passed away several
years ago. From her notes i find that my great great grandfather,
Henry Westbrook, was born Feb. 27,1773 in Pittsylvania County, Va. He
mirgated to Barnwell Dist. S.C. where he married Mildred Anne Smith
daughter of John Smith and Sarah Smith.  According to her notes
Henry's father was also named Henry.  He was a Revolutionary War
soldier (4th Continental Line) .  He had a brother , Allen Westbrook,
who fought on the 6th C. L..  My mother has also noted that according
to other census records 1782 that Henry had 6 dependents one of whom
was the Henry that migrated to S.C.Although my mother had a good deal
of information on our family, she did not keep references to where the
information came from.

John Smith died in 1799 leaving his wife Sarah , a married daughter
Mildred Anne Smith Westbrook. a son Edmund Smith, 3 minor children
Harriett, Pamela and Matilda.
His widow,Sarah, administered his estate aconsisting of land, personal
property and slaves until 1801, when she married Andrew Gray

Henry Westbrook with his wife and children along with Edmund Smith ,
Sarah Smith Gray and her children came to Mississippi in 1810. They
settled in Amite County , MS.

Henry and Mildred had 13 children one of whom was my great
grandfather,Edmund Smith Westbrook.Henry died in Amite County on Jan.
8, 1845 and Mildred died there on Nov. 17,1859.

I have also been told that my gg grandfathers  father was named
Thomas. I would like any information that I can get on the Westbrooks.

families especially the parents/siblings of Pleasant Webb. Thanks a million.
================================================================
Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about ca 1760. His son, Elias, said that
his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland (not substantiated). He died
between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in
to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1803 (reported
to be 45 years old) he was in Scioto County, Ohio and was said to be a
notorious character. Supposedly, he tried to break up a fight between James
Bradley and the wife and children of James Quire (Squires). He ended up
shooting Mr. Quire (Squires). After this incident at the Licks, he was
driven out of that area. He is also said to have been a Tory during the
Revolutionary War. Pleasant was in GreenupCounty, Kentucky in 1820 and in
Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830, he did not appear in the 1840 census, so it
is believed he died between 1830-1840. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown
(Margaret BLACKWELL?) had the following children: James WEBB (1786), Elias
WEBB (1788), Thomas Hanley WEBB (1795), Aden WEBB (1797), Temperance WEBB
(1799), William WEBB (1801), Margaret WEBB (1806), Sarah (Sally) WEBB
(1809), and Baker WEBB (1811).

I am looking for the parents and siblings of

George BELL  (b. Unknown, probably btwn 1765 to 1795; d. before March 17,

His will was dated February 14, 1823 and probated March 17, 1823 in

January 28, 1821.

"His Will"

for the benefit of all my children. I wish my children Washington, William,
Nathan, Martha, and Adam, schooled and supported out of my estate, and the
balance equally divided between them, when Adam is 21.  I appoint Nathan
Bell executor of my estate.  In testimony of which I have hereunto affixed
my hand and seal this 14th of February, 1823.  George Bell.

NOTE: no mention was made of his wife so we presumed she was dead.
NOTE: his son Nathan was too young to be his executor

His wife: Nancy Barden (also spelled Barding; m. March 1813, Amelia Co, Va)

I am researching the Washam family and have
reached a dead end.  I am a direct descendant of
Peyton Washam and his wife Lucy _____ who moved
from Pittsylvania County, VA, to Western Kentucky
sometime between 1804 and 1820.  All I know of him
is that he had a son, Peter, (my great-great-great
grandfather), born August 8, 1804, in Pittsylvania
County, and seven other children (not named) born
sometime before March, 1820, when he arrived in the
Panther Creek area in eastern Graves County, KY.
He and one son, Peter, had left wife Lucy and seven
other children in Princeton, KY, to go to Panther
Creek.  They were to build a home and start planting
prior to bringing the rest of the family there.  Peyton
died in July, 1820, after falling victim to some disease,
never seeing his wife and other children again.
I know the history of Peter Washam after that but I
have no information of the Washam family prior to their
move to Kentucky.   I need information on Peyton and
Lucy's life in Virginia, their parents, children other than
Peter, etc.

I am searching for "Nancy" Anna H. HODGES, born 4 February 1788 (as
inscribed on her headstone in Holmes County, MS). My search led me to VA
because I located a reference that Anna H. HODGES was the great-great aunt
of former NC Governor (1954-1961) Luther H. HODGES. The NC State Librarian
advised me that Governor HODGES was born in Pittsylvania County, VA. That
is why I am contacting you. If you are able to locate a HODGES family
genealogy that includes Anna H. HODGES, born on 4 February 1788 (with or
without mention of Governor HODGES), I would very much like to obtain a
complete copy of it so I might learn who Anna's parents and siblings were,
their associated dates, etc. Anna H. HODGES was my great-great-great
Maternal Grandmother. Thank you very much for your help.

Since I contacted you last week, I have
found out a bit more on the Hodges line in which Anna H. Hodges may be
located. It is the line of descendancy described by the following individuals:

Robert Hodges (b. 1737; d. 1832), father of ...
Elijah Hodges (b. ca 1786-1790; d. 1856, m. Judith Hodges **), father of ...
Willis Townsend Hodges (b. 1831; d. 1907), father of ...
John James Hodges (b. 1860; d. 1936), father of ...
Luther Hartwell Hodges (b. 1898, Pittsylvania, VA; d. 6 Oct 1974).

** Judith was the daughter of another Robert Hodges (b. ca 1770; d. ca 1844)

Since Judith was born 4 Feb 1788, my current theory is that she may have
been sister to either Elijah Hodges or Judith Hodges considering she was
born in 1788.

Do any of these names ring a bell with you? Please let me know one way or
the other. I would really appreciate hearing from you.

I'm looking for the parents of a Rebecca Annie ALDRIDGE. She was the wife of
a Riley D. COLLINS.

The 1910 Roanoke County Census has Riley D. Collins (age 55) and his wife
Annie (age 47) and their daughters "(unreadable)" (age 15) & Lydia (age 23).

The 1900 Franklin County Census has Riley D. Collins (age 47;1853) and his
wife "Rebecca A." (Rebecca Annie Aldridge; age 40;1860) along with their
children.

Riley was in the 1870 Floyd County Census and I don't know when he moved to
Franklin County. I don't know whether he married Rebecca in Franklin or
Floyd County, or some other county or what county she was from. Riley is
missing from the 1880 VA Census Soundex and the 1880 Floyd, Franklin, &
Roanoke County Census. I'm wondering if maybe he was in Pittsylvania County
during the 1880 census.

I'm told that Riley COLLINS was buried in Roanoke, VA and that his wife
Rebecca Annie ALDRIDGE was buried in Danville, VA so I believe their must be
some Pittsylvania connection. Why else would she choose to be buried in
Danville instead of with her husband in Roanoke? Are their others

Please, feel free to pass on the following information with those in the
Pittsylvania County, VA. area, as we know there are family members there.
Our thanks, to you.........

Dear Family and Friends:

Four of us who are connected via the Keesee-KisseeCousin weekly e-mail
update listing (ably managed and administered by Sandra Farney at e-mail
sfarney@webzone.net) have been discussing and pre-planning an initial Grand

Keesee-Kissee Family Reunion 2000.

        WHERE:  DANVILLE, PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA
WHEN:    AFTER MEMORIAL DAY, 1 THRU 3 JUNE 2000 Thursday-Saturday)

To assist in our planning, we need to know WHO MAY ATTEND, WHO WILL ATTEND,

and WHO WILL NOT ATTEND and the lodging needs of those who may/will attend.

We are also searching the Danville Area to find a church/ministry retreat
center (or like facility) where we could have our reunion and also to lower

costs.  Regardless, we need some idea of who may/will attend and are asking

you to please give us some idea of your needs by responding now to the
questions noted below.  When we have an idea of the number of who/may will
attend we can provide more details and a tentative agenda for our Reunion
2000.

REUNION PLANNING QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS

1.  This is a great reunion idea and I plan to attend and will bring
_________(number) members of my family.

        a.  Send me information as the reunion planning develops. _____YES

                                        _____ NO.

        b.  Send me information ONLY after all planning is complete._____YES

                                            _____ NO.

2.  I am notifying other family members who I have listed in the COMMENTS
section listed below.

3.  I know that any family reunion planning cannot be accomplished without
the hard work and financial support to cover administrative, postal, making

and securing reservations, telephone calls, etc. and a minimal registration

cost will probably be imposed at the time of the reunion.  However, to
assist
the planning committee (and knowing it is not tax deductible), I would be
prepared to contribute the amount of $_________ to the planning committee
when all details are completed to assist in thier efforts in this family
reunion.  We will keep our planning expenses to a minimum and will provide
accountability for what amounts we receive.

4.  I cannot attend.  However I can contribute $__________ to assist the
Reunion 2000 planning.  Please keep me informed of the final details to
include planned reunion events and activities.

5.  I cannot attend.  DO NOT SEND ME ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. _______

6.  Tell me how I can assist the planning committee to make the
Keesee-Kissee
Family Reunion 2000 a big success.  _________

7.  I can assist in planning the Keesee-Kissee Family Reunion 2000 by doing

any of the following (or add your own):

_____Serving as a member of the Reunion 2000 Planning Committee
_____Be a speaker at the Reunion 2000 dinner andor seminars
_____Bring a family bible, archives, photos, data to the Reunion 2000
