MORTON - I am researching my family back to Virginia. Although I live in Charlotte, NC, my grandmother's family was from Greenup, Kentucky. They were Morton's and, according to the "History of Greenup County," the family came from Prince Edward County Virginia. This would have been about 1800. To quote from this book, "The Morton family claim English origin and descend from prominent English noblemen, among them Count Robert Morton, who is said to have been the half brother of William the Conqueror. Thomas Morton, probably the first of the name in America, settled in Virginia, where he lived at Morton Hall, Prince Edward County. Here a son, John Morton, was born in 1730. John married mary Anderson and they had a family of seven sons. He was a captain of the Prince Edward Militia, and his seven sons were in his company." It goes on to say his son Josiah, born in 1763, married in 1790 to Nancy Fuqua of Campbell County, VA and moved to Kentucky. I am curious to both confirm this history and to expand it. Please contact me. Charles Morton Watts (Charley) 4955 Plum Nearly Lane Charlotte, NC 28211 704 364-8184 email

DAVIDSON MCDEARMONROE MCDEARMON OWEN EWING - BRACKETT DAVISON was born in Prince Edward Co., VA on November 17, 1796. He was the second son of George Davidson and Lucretia McDearmon, both of whom were born in Prince Edward County. His parents moved to Maury Co., TN sometime after his grandmother, Sarah Owen Davidson, died in 1809. (In the final settlement of Sarah's will in 1825, it was noted that she spelled the family name Davison) George Davidson bought one hundred acres on Flat Creek for $200 on May 20, 1816 from Samuel Polk, father of President James Knox Polk. Polk, who had received 5,000 acres in a North Carolina land grant in Maury County, was a friend and neighbor of the Davidsons in Iredale Co., NC. Brackett bought several parcels of land adjoining and from Polk's grant and near the land of his father-in-law, James Hardison. Brackett married Delilah Hardison, daughter of James Hardison and Mary Roberson on August 3, 1817. In 1838, Brackett sold his land on Flat Creek and moved his family to Missouri. Brackett and Delilah Hardison Davidson had fourteen children, the first twelve born in Maury Co., TN, the last two in Polk Co., MO. They were: *Thomas McDearmon, b. May 16, 1818, m. I do not know his spouse or his dates and I have the name of only one child: William Stephen Geers, who was born in 1816. Working bacwards from this, Thomas Geers would have been born some time between roughly 1765 and 1795. I don't know the location of Thomas Geers' birth or if he had other children. William Stephen Geers moved to Roane County, Tennessee, by 1848, because he married Martha Elizabeth Wiley there on August 31, 1848. They had one son, William Henry Geers, from whom I am descended, and four daughters. I don't know if Thomas went to Tennessee, also, but I doubt it. THOMPSON BAKER SHILLIDEAY MC GHEE - ABRAHAM THOMSON/THOMPSON born c1716, died c1772, was the son of the Rev. John Thompson, born c1680-90 Ireland or Scotland. The Rev. John Thomson died in Rowan Co. NC. Sept 1753, in the home of his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Samuel Baker. Abraham Thompson was of Prince Edward Co. VA. His son, John, was born c1736, who died leaving a will 26 Mar 1793, proved 1795, in which he names his children: Robert, Roger, John born. c1759, Sarah, Jane born. 1765, she left will, 14 Jan 1828, she married Cabel Baker by bond 17 Mar 1782. It is possible that John (c1759) the son of John (c1736) and grandson of Abraham (1716) married, 19 Nov 1779, Jane Shillideay the daughter of George and Esther (Baker) Shillideay. Mr. John G. Herndon in his artcle in Virginia Magazine of History & Biography Vol LI. pages 394-404 stated that John (c1756) marry Mary Ann McGehee. However, in tracing the McGhee family, it is found that Mary Ann was about 20 years older than this John. It is more likely that she was married to his father, John Thomson (1736), and was his mother. Any information on this line of the Rev. John Thomson family will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Gloria Padach

CARTER, ATWOOD - Does anyone have any information on the James Carter listed in these two land deeds? In Deed Book 1, 1754-1759, page 167a: Sep. 10, 1759 from Elisha Eastis of Amelia County, to Thomas Scott of P [Prince Edward County], executor and guardian to JAMES CARTER, for 80 pounds, a certain tract of land of 800 acres in P between Bri[e]ry and Bush Rivers & bounded by Parsons, Rudd, McGehee, Davis, ATWOOD, it being a tract of land patented to the said Eastis on Oct. 15, 1758. Signed - Elisha Eastis. Wit - none. Recorded Sep. 11, 1759 after Elisha Eastis acknowledged this deed to James Carter. And in Deed Book 2, 1759 - 1765, page 130a: Jul. 21, 1762 from Thomas Tabb of Amelia County, to William Atwood of P, for 35 pounds,a certain tract of land of 443 acres in P on the lower side of Little Briery River, it being part of a tract formerly granted to James Atwood and bounded by the lines of Thomas Scott, James Carter, Jacob McGehee, and Alexander Keene. Signed Thomas Tabb. Wit - none. Recorded Dec. 14, 1762. I am convinced that there was some sort of intermarriage between the Atwoods and the Carters, maybe with James Carter, himself. The Atwood name gets carried in my Carter family inexplicably from about this time for two generations.
