The Peak Creek Cemetery named by the Holmes family is located in Newbern, off Jones Point Drive a private road off Towes Ferry Road near the Baptist Camp across from the mouth of Peak Creek on Claytor Lake. According to family members, John Holmes game to America from Ireland. He married Mary Atchley in northern Virginia. They had 3 sons, William, Joshua, and Alexander. After the death of John Holmes, his widow, Mary married Enoch Muirheid. Enoch brought the family to Montgomery County, which is now Pulaski County. Dr. William Holmes purchased the land, (which is about an acre) from a Mr. King. Ironically, Dr. Holmes is not even buried there, but in Oakwood Cemetery in the Town of Pulaski. When the New River was dammed to create Claytor Lake a lot of cemeteries had to be moved. The Holmes graves are in their original location. Although it has been told through the years that Enoch Muirheid was buried in a lower elevation, which is now Claytor Lake, so just his tombstone was moved to what is now the Peak Creek Holmes Cemetery. His stone is broken and laying inside the wrought iron fence beside the Holmes/Raines Tombstone.
