SW Times SUTPHIN, Joseph Clarence, (Jack), 79, of Roanoke, formerly of Pulaski, died Sunday, September 17, 2000 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center. He was born November 8, 1920, a son of the late James Highley and Shippie Walke Sutphin. He was a member and Deacon Emeritus of Melrose Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a veteran of World War II. He retired from Walker Machine & Foundry Company, where he was employed as a machinist. Surviving are his wife, Emily Gerberich Sutphin; two sisters, Thada S. Quesenberry of Charlottesville and Dorothy S. Gertis of Beaufort, S. C.; also nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Laura Ann Sutphin, four brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at 11 a.m. from the Lotz Salem Chapel, with interment in the Huddle Family Cemetery near Draper, Va. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a favorite charity. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Lotz Salem Chapel.
