BLAKEMORE

Julia

WYSOR

Saturday January 22, 1921
Dublin – The announcement of the death of Mrs. Julia Wysor Blakemore, received here Friday from the Christiansburg Hospital came as a great shock to relatives and friends notwithstanding the fact her condition had been known to be in extremis for several days and no hopes entertained for her recovery. Complications developing following the birth of a daughter, just two weeks ago today, was the cause of death. The funeral was conducted this afternoon at two o’clock from the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Wysor, Sr., where the body was brought Friday afternoon. The service was conducted by the Rev. M.E. Hansel, her pastor, after which interment was made in the family plot in New Dublin cemetery.
The deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Wysor Sr., and was born, reared, and spent practically her entire life in the community. She was one of three children, two brothers, Captain R.E. Wysor, Jr. and Captain J. Donald Wysor, surviving with her parents. She was in her 26th year. September 4, 1919 in the New Dublin church she wedded John A. Blakemore of Emory, Va. The union was a particularly happy one, the immediately after returning from their bridal trip taking residence at Mr. Blakemore’s home at Emory. A daughter was born to them just two weeks ago at the Christiansburg hospital and in this particular death seems more particularly distressing, leaving the husband and infant in a broken family circle so recently made. The baby was name Mary Walker for her grandmother on her father’s side.

BONHAM

Elizabeth

Pulaski is the less now that Elizabeth Bonham has died. Little children will never again delight in seeing all her cats sunning themselves next to Sixth Street Park. Passers-by will miss the brilliant colors in her English garden or the chance to talk endlessly with her about the stars, the constellations, and different varieties of tomatoes, or even the Punic Wars. She was, indeed, a gentle woman whose grandfather, Benjamin Blocksidge, migrated from England in the 1890's to her beloved hometown, Pulaski. Everyone who knew Elizabeth has a story to tell. It is said that her father took her to Christmas Mass at Christ Episcopal when she was very small. She loved the church and especially that pew, and until she became ill, she occupied that pew every Sunday-for eight decades! But she certainly did not just sit. She became church historian, altar guild chairwoman and member of the Women's Auxiliary. She used her artistic talent to do the handwork on the altar linens, to design and craft the needlepoint kneelers for the altar rail and the choir stalls. Also she drew the edifice of the church that appears on the Sunday bulletin. One year she received national attention for her illustration of a Christmas procession. Ms. Elizabeth Bonham, lifelong resident of Pulaski, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003, after a prolonged illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Alice Bonham. Only a few cousins survive her. An accomplished painter and photographer, Ms. Bonham was a fervent patron of the arts and a vital supporter of the Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley. Ms. Bonham studied literature and art at Goucher College in Baltimore. After her travels abroad, she returned home to care for her parents. She also became the County Coordinator for the Office of Economic Opportunity, then worked for the library, followed by a stint reading proof for The Southwest Times and working with the Census Bureau. Friends may honor her at the 10:30 a.m. interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski, on Saturday, November 22, 2003, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Pulaski, with Rev. Vickie Houk officiating. A reception and visitation will follow the service in the Church Parrish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested for Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 975, Pulaski, Va. 24301. Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski, Va., is in charge of the arrangements

BROWN

Oscar

Wednesday October 13, 1920
Oscar Brown, a colored child two and a half years old, feel into the lake yesterday afternoon and drowned. The body as found floating on top of the water a short time after he had been missing and was not cold, but efforts to resuscitate proved fruitless.
An inquest was held over the body to determine whether there were any suspicious grounds for foul play, but it was determined there were none and a burial permit issued. The body was interred this afternoon in the Needmore cemetery.
The mother of the child upon leaving town some time ago left him in the care of Kittie Willis, who live in one of the houses on Commerce street the premises which extend back to the lake. He was accustomed to playing in the back and water seemed to have a fascination for him and his almost constant companion was a little wooly dog. At one point there is rather a steep descent into the water and the tracks of the child indicated he had gotten on this incline and slipped into the water.
The occupants of the house were ironing. They were attracted to the lake side by the running back and forth of the dog, braking of which excited their attention. They went out to find the body of the child floating on top of the water about ten feet from the bank. It was immediately gotten out and Dr. Corbin called. He failing in an effort to revive it, Sheriff Bones and Dr. Chaffin, corner, were called to make an examination. After an investigation and examination of the body it was the opinion that death was due to drowning as a result of the child accidentally slipping into the water when too close to the edge.
