Winnie

MABE

  Monday August 2, 1920
Death at noontide today claimed a beautiful child life, Winnie Mabel Dalton, the 15 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sexton Dalton. Desperately ill since Thursday from heart complications her condition grew more and more hopeless each day and since last night the end was momentarily expected, it being realized that every means had been exhausted to stay death.
The funeral service will be held at 3:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist church, interment to be made in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mabel, as she was affectionately known, was born at Sylvatus November 25, 1905. She was one of seven children, a sister having died seven years ago at the age of three. Besides her parents, these brothers and sisters survive: Roland, Carson, Mozelle, Carman, Sylva, and Quinton. She had always been delicate heart trouble manifesting itself when a mere baby.
The family moved to Pulaski seven years ago. Here she added to the number of her young friends continuously by her sweet and childish manner. Eager for and education, she was not satisfied out of school. Last session she complete the first year in high school, and notwithstanding she lost a month on account of illness, made among the highest marks in the school, being within a fraction of carrying off the honors for the highest grade, receiving special mention when the awards were made. She loved school and its works as few children do. More then a year ago, she joined the Baptist church having previously and since attended services, feeling therein joys which she could now find elsewhere. Her short life was beautiful in its simplicity and buoyed with enthusiasm notwithstanding the frailties as a result of her afflictions. She radiated happiness about her and this will serve to her relative and friends as a heritage from one they all loved and whose memory they will ever cherish.
The service for the burial of the body of Winnie Mabel Dalton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sexton Dalton, was conducted from the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The pastor, the Rev, L.C. Dickerson officiated assisted by the Rev. T.M. Bane. Many relatives and friends attended to pay a last tribute of love. AN impressive feature of the service was the solo “A Busy Little Worker” sweetly sung by Georgia Hudson, her child friend.
The pallbearers were R.F. Pierce, J.A. Flanagan, A.T. Martin, and L.W. Milton. The floral tributes were exceedingly beauty and appropriateness. These were borne by a member of her Sunday school and school friends. Beneath a bank of flowers the body rest in Oakwood cemetery.

DEHART

Charles

L.

FAIRLAWN - Charles L. DeHart (81) of Fairlawn, Virginia, or Charlie as he was affectionately known, was a "character" to be sure. From the saddle of his motorcycle to the trenches of a high school football game, Charlie won the hearts of many folks and created a long list of friends along the way. Perhaps closest to his heart was his church. Grace Episcopal Church played a major part in Charlie's life as he served as a lay reader, lay eucharistic minister, vestryman, senior warden, and was trustee when he died on Thursday, October 13th at 11:40pm. His devotion to God and his church were undeniable. Charlie was born on June 22nd, 1924 to the late Charles Jefferson DeHart and Alline Harless DeHart. He graduated from Radford High School and volunteered to serve his country during World War II. He traveled to Kansas and attended the Army Specialized Training Corp. and was appointed Line Officer of the Army 102nd company and then as an infantry officer of an Ameri-Cal division in the South Pacific. He served his country for over three years and shared many a story, some "taller" than others, with friends about those days. After returning from the war Charlie attended Emory and Henry University and Virginia Tech University (and he always loved the Hokies!). One summer he played catcher for the semi-pro Narrows Rebels Baseball team, which is where he met his bride to be Meryl Agnes Greenall (DeHart). He said he knew he would marry her the minute he saw her, and when she got in the car Charlie made sure that she was sitting next to himÖanother one of Charlie's great life stories. Charlie joined the Virginia State Police where he served proudly. He commented on his successful career as a trooper with these words, "I believe in peopleÖ..I always tried not to judge people myself". Following his retirement from the State Police he was employed locally as a demolitions expert. But what most people will remember Charlie for are his evenings refereeing sandlot and high school football games. The great stories Charlie would tell about big games and the stories that have been told by players who had the privilege of playing under the watchful eye of that big jolly referee. On December 9th, 1989 Charlie was honored for ten years of distinguished service as a VHSL official only a week after officiating the state championship football game. Another place people were sure to find Charlie was on the saddle of his prized Honda motorcycle. He was a member of the Retreads Motorcycle group and traveled many miles and made many lasting friendships along the way. Even when he could no longer ride, you would find Charlie in the basement of his house sitting on his bike and "tinkering" with things. Charlie was a community man, always getting involved and reaching out. Only recently he served on the planning committee for the statewide celebrations to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the Jamestown ColonyÖand the list could go on! Yes, a character of the New River Valley has been taken from us, but our love for him will carry on, and our admiration for his love for all of us, his neighbors, will inspire generations to come. Charlie was the widower of Meryl Agnes Greenall DeHart. He was survived by a son, Charles Luther DeHart Jr., and daughter-in-law Elizabeth DeHart of Corpus Christi, Texas; granddaughter Julianna Terhune of Florida; a brother Jefferson Hope DeHart of Texas; and a Sister Barbara Jewel DeHart Williams and her husband Wilson Eugene Williams of Martinsville, Virginia. Funeral services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on the corner of 4th and Harvey Streets in Radford, VA at 1pm on Thursday, October 27th. Charlie requested that in lieu of flowers, family and friends make a contribution to the Grace Episcopal Church Garden Fund.

DEHART

John

West

  Monday November 8, 1920
A message received here by relatives brought the sad intelligence of the death of John West DeHart, who was killed Saturday at Gadsden, Ala., while about his duties at the Alabama Iron furnace, where he was employed as a foreman. The message did not give the circumstances connected with the tragic affair, merely stating it was due to an accident. The body is expected to reach Pulaski this afternoon on No. 26 for burial in Oakwood cemetery by the side of a son who died in youth.
The deceased was born in Floyd County 49 years ago. He came to Pulaski and was employed for some years at Dora furnace as a mechanic. About 11 years ago he moved to Gadsden where he has been employed ever since. He leaves his widow and one daughter, Mrs. C.L. Cornelius of Gadsden. There are four sisters, Mrs. Lee, Mrs.> Compton, Mrs. Epperly, and Mrs. Weddle, and three brothers all living in Floyd and one brother W.G. DeHart of Radford.
He was a member of the Pulaski Lodge No. 61 I.O.O.F. never having removed his membership after moving from Pulaski. The fraternity will have charge of the funeral arrangements. He was a man who was esteemed by a large circle of friends during his residence here and the announcement of his death is learned with exceeding regret.

Tuesday November 9, 1920
The remains of John W. DeHart who accidental death at Gadsden, Ala., was reported in the Times Monday, were buried this morning at 11 o’clock in Oakwood cemetery. The service was conducted by Pulaski Lodge No. 61 I.O.O.F. of which he was a member, Prayer and the benediction having been offered by the Rev. R.M. Standefer, of the Methodist church. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful.
Funeral service was held from the Methodist church at Gadsden just preceding leaving for Pulaski, the deceased having been a steward of that church, his pastor officiating.
The circumstances in connection with the death of Mr. DeHart could neo be ascertained until the arrival of the family with the remains yesterday afternoon on No. 26, the preliminary message merely stating that he had been the victim of an accident. With the body were the widow, Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Cornelius and baby, son-in-law and daughter, and William Duane.
Mr. DeHart’s death was the result of an explosion of dynamite at furnace No. 1 of the Alabama Company, which operation is closed down for repairs. He and two employees, one white and one colored, were using dynamite cleaning out the hearth and just what happened to cause the explosion is now known as Mr. DeHart was instantly killed, the white man perhaps fatally injured and the negro badly shocked, so no authentic account could be secured as to the cause up to the time of the departure of the funeral party for Pulaski. The deceased was badly maimed. The explosion occurred about 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon.

A 1998 graduate of Pulaski County High School in Virginia, he joined the army immediately after and spent 7 months with the peace keeping forces in Bosnia. During that time Micheal’s future wife, Christine Garard of Murrysville, had begun mailing letters to him through an Adopt-A-Platoon program. When he returned to Ft. Stewart, Ga. he traveled to meet Christine in person. Christine says “we became best friends and fell in love. I knew from the first second I saw him that he’d be the man I’d marry”. They exchanged vows on Mar. 7, 2002 and had a formal ceremony February 22, 2003. Micheal and Christine are expecting their first child in October. In Christine’s words, “I want everyone to know that Micheal was a loving, caring, and brave man. I was always so proud of him and always will be. I respected him for serving our country, and he will always be my hero. I will keep his spirit alive. He was so excited about becoming a father. Last week he chose a name for the baby boy we are expecting. Last time I spoke to him was on Friday night. He was on his way to the promotion board and wanted to hear my voice before he went. He told me he would be home before our baby was born. We both said we loved and missed each other.
