NYE

Thornton

Wytheville, Va. – The body of Thornton Nye, who just died here, is on its way to a medical institute in Boston, Mass., while a dummy has been placed in his coffin and buried with appropriate service.
Thornton Nye was almost a dwarf, but his head was so huge that he had to walk slowly for fear of over balancing and toppling over. Some years ago he sold his head to a medical institute for several thousands dollars, paid at the time, with the head to be delivered to the Boston Medical Institute on his death.
When he died last week at the age of 56 the family objected to decapitating the corpse, so the entire body was shipped to the medical institute. Nye’s ninety-year old mother wanted to have a funeral for him and a dummy was placed in the casket and interred with a funeral service.
In the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington hangs a picture of Nye which was painted by David Silvetter, Richmond artist, about five years ago, and which was awarded a prize and acquired by the art gallery.
Nye was well known in Pulaski.
***WWI draft card lists a Thornton Nye born 2/15/1879 resident in Wythe County.
