Pension Application of Henry Evans: S8441

State of Virginia}

Rockbridge County}     August 16th 1832

            On this day personally appeared before me William Paxton, a Justice of the peace for the County aforesaid, Henry Evans, a resident in s’d County & State, aged ninety one years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.

            That he entered into the service of the U States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated. He states, that from extreme age, and from mental and bodily infirmities he he is unable at this time to give a full account of his services, and of dates and places. he states that he first entered into the service of the United States as a volunteer against the Cherokee Indians under Capt John Gilmore, then of Rockbridge County [formed in 1778 from Augusta and Botetourt counties], State of Virginia, and now dead. he does not recollect any other officers under whom he served in this expedition, but is under an impression that Hugh Logan was a Lieutenant, then of Bottetourt, now removed to some of the Western States. This applicant believes that he served about two months in this expedition.

            This applicant further states that in his next tour in the service of the United States, he was drafted as a militia man for three months, that he marched from Rockbridge about 1779 or 80 under Capt William Hall (or James Hall), then of s’d County of Rockbridge, and now dead, to Richmond where he joined Head quarters under what Regular officers he does not now Recollect. from thence he believes he went to Petersburg. in this Tour he believes he served Three months. he states that he was in no skirmishes in this expedition.

This applicant further states, that he was again drafted as a Militia man and marched from Rockbridge afores’d about 1781 or 2 under Capt James Gilmore, then of s’d County, now dead, and John Relin[?] Orderly Seargeant, then of s’d County & now dead. That he marched to Richmond, and thence to the Siege of York [28 Sep - 19 Oct 1781] under what Regular officers he cannot now recollect. In this Tour he served Three months.

            This applicant further states that he went from s’d County of Rockbridge under Cpt William Paxton, then of Rockbridge [sic: Botetourt] County, Virginia, and now dead to Point Pleasant against the Indians [Battle of Point Pleasant in present WV, 10 Oct 1774], the particulars of this expedition he cannot now recollect.

            This applicant further states, that he was born in the County of Albemarle State of Virginia in the year 1740.

            He has not any record of his age.

He states that he was living in s’d County of Rockbridge when drafted into service, where he has lived since

            He states that he never received a discharge.

He refers to James Greenlee Esq’r  Capt Samuel C. Burks of his immediate neighborhood for his character as a man of veracity and that they believe him to have been a Revolutionary soldier.

            This applicant hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a Pension or annuity except the Present, and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any State.
