State of Virginia
Rockbridge County to Wit,
on this 4th day of September 1832 personally appeared before me (a Justice of the peace in and for the said County of Rockbridge) Henry Hinkle of said County aged about Eighty three years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 That he entered the service of the United States during the revolutionary War, in or about the year 1779, under the command of Capt George Bill who resided near Winchester in the State of Virginia; that he served three tours of duty of three months each making nine months in the whole, and under the said Cap’t Bill. Colo. Dark [possibly Darke] (afterwards General Dark) Commanded the regiment. that during the last tour of duty in the year 1781 he this affiant was at Yorktown in Virginia when the British army was taken under Lord Cornwallis [19 Oct]; that during the Campain he was arduously engaged in the fortification that he was one who guarded the prisoners taken there untill they arrived at the Barracks near Winchester in the State of Virginia, that about two weeks after the prisoners arrived at the Barracks aforesaid he was discharged. that the Capt fell sick, and gave a general discharge to the men under his command. that he has no documentary evidence of his service, nor does he know of any person who could testify to it, as he afterwards removed from the neighbourhood of Winchester to the County of Rockbridge and the persons who might testify to his service are all either dead or too remote, and he does not even know where any of his companions in the service reside.
and he hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension list, roll of the agency of any state Sworn to and subscribed before me a Justice of the peace in and for said County the day and year first aforesaid [signed] Henry Hinkle
