Can someone please tell me the approximate location of the Salem Turnpike
of 1889. My ancestor, John Crouse, owned 42 1/2 acres on it near the corporation
limits. It sold in 1889 for $15,600 to a Mr. John Epps. This seems like
a large amount of money for that amount of land. The letter to my gggrandmother
about the sale of her father's property indicated that at the sale there
was a large attendance, including representatives of several syndicates
and the bidding was conducted with considerable spirit. Does anyone know
whether a railroad or something may have been planned there at that time?

children to go "belling" Does anyone know what the term means?

lived in Galveston, where she died in 1893. 1880 says both her parents

War pension in 1833 from Rockbridge County, Virginia. He used the surname
spelling "McLaughlin" in that application, which was approved on the second
submission. He was granted a pension of $40 per year and some $240 in arrears.
He lived in Rockbridge county at that time and was nearly blind and very
poor. He was born in Bedford Co, VA in December of 1857 and served in the
4th VA Line during the Rev War. He was illiterate and had used the surname
spelling "Glackin" on some earlier VA land deeds. He married an Elizabeth
Boggs and they had two children, Charles M. and Mary H. both born in what
is now Greenbrier Co, WV around 1780. I am looking for information about
William and Elizabeth's married life, possible death dates and burial locations
and anything on William's parents. Any information would be appreciated,
