Hello, Rockbridge List!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! USGENWEB lost these images with their move. I am aware and I'm trying to get them back again. Rena; Web ADM.

Angela Ruley and I are proud to announce the completion of THE
ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY MARRIAGE BONDS (1778-1801) archives site:

Here you will find 1,354 scanned images.  These images were scanned
directly from the ORIGINAL MARRIAGE BONDS located at the Rockbridge
County Courthouse in Lexington, Virginia.

There is an alphabetical  INDEX BY BRIDE and a second alphabetical INDEX
BY GROOM.

There is a THIRD index for each individual bond (still in upload status
at this time!)
This index lists the names of all who signed the marriage bond or the
consent. It lists the names of the bride and groom AND the names of the
bondsmen, witnesses, and parents (if they are listed as such on the bond
or consent) of the bride and/or groom.

If the woman was over 21 no consent for marriage was necessary.  In some
cases there may be a consent simply attesting to the fact that the bride
is over 21.

There may be more than one record listed in the index for each
marriage.  The record that begins with “Know all men ....” is the BOND.
If it does not begin with those words then it is the CONSENT to marry.

I should remind you that these records represent ALL of the marriage
bonds for the years 1778-1801 that are located at the courthouse.

We hope that you find a relative or two and enjoy looking at their
original signatures!  I found a few from my family tree and since Angie
seems to be related to every family in the county, there were several of
hers!  It is fun to browse the bonds and consents and enjoy the spelling
variations.  We must have found the word “marriage” spelled at least
twenty different ways!  (Aren’t we glad we have “spellcheck”!)

If you find any errors (... and we promise we have checked and
rechecked!), please email one of us and we will get it corrected as soon
as possible.

We would like to thank the GOLDEN RULE FOUNDATION in Maine for the grant
issued to fund the computer equipment and the software for this
project!  As with all of us, our time was donated!!  Without their
generous grant we would not have been able to begin, much less complete,
this project.

Also, a special THANK YOU to BRUCE PATTERSON, Rockbridge Clerk of the
Court, for allowing us access to the bonds...AND TO THE LADIES IN THE
CLERK’S OFFICE!

A THANK YOU to Dr. William Watt and to Dr. Bill Ruble for their efforts
on our behalf!

And last ,but not least to ANGELA RULEY a true Rockbridge treasure ....
THANK YOU!  You have been a wonderful person with whom to work ! Angie
deserves all the “thanks” you can offer!

Please enjoy this site and pass it along to anyone researching their
Rockbridge heritage!!

Sincerely,

Marilyn Headley
