In Dr. Wayland's book, History of Rockingham County, Virginia, John Dinkle was said to be the founder of Dinkletown, presently Bridgewater. About 1810 he built a carding mill, a sawmill, and a grist mill on the north side of the river, about a quarter of a mile below the bridge.
