People & Places of Historic Harrisonburg
These diagrams of street layouts, buildings and owners/occupants are based
on a book titled "My Recollections of Rocktown - Now Known as Harrisonburg" by
Maria G. Carr. Also used was John W. Wayland's descriptions and explanations of the
location of Mrs. Carr's remembrances found in his "Historic Harrisonburg". Both
of these books are available from the Harrisonburg/Rockingham
Historical Society. Mrs. Carr wrote her manuscript in 1892 at the age of 80 years,
describing the Harrisonburg of her childhood. It was first printed in pamphlet form by Mr.
Frank L. Sublett about 1926, and republished by the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical
Society in 1984 with explanations added by John W. Wayland. Much more information on
families and customs and "happenings" in the Harrisonburg area are given in Mrs.
Carr's book. If you are interested in additional information please contact the Historical
Society regarding purchase of the book(s).
The placement of the structures on the maps is my interpretation based on the above
sources, and as such are subject to errors. All locations are approximate.
