- BLACKWELL, FOX, NEWBY posted by Sherrie Carter on
Wednesday, April 1, 1998
- I am interested in finding out if there was a slaveowner in Rockingham County by the
name of John Fox. Other possible names would've been Samuel Fox, or Elizabeth Fox?
Blackwell. Also, if there is any information available in Rockingham county on
slaves (possible free), it would be quite helpful. Apparently, from what I can gather from
a list of negroes, John Fox also had slaves in Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Augusta
Counties. He died in 1859 and in a 1839 will, had willed that all of his slaves be
set free upon his death. I am looking for any slaves (mulattos) by the name (last)
Newby. Also, were there any slave owners by the name of Newby. Again, any
information you may have or be able to inform me of would be of great assistance.
Thank you.
