MCGLAMMERY, NEAL, RAY, WRAY posted by Loraine Kerns on Sunday, March 7, 1999

I have been researching (W)Rays for several years and am up against a brick wall. My gr-gr-gr-gr grandparents were Thomas Wray & Rachel Neal who were married in Monroe Co. WV in 1802. Thomas was, according to a grandson, from Rockingham Co. VA. I have been tracing a couple, John & Susanna Ray of Rockingham, and they may be the parents of Thomas. Thomas had a brother, John that married Sally McGlammery, dau. of Mathias & Lydia McGlammery in Greenbrier Co WV in 1799. Mathias & Lydia were from Rockingham Co. as were many of their neighbors in the Greenbrier/Monroe Co. area of WV. John & Susanna Ray had property on Smith's Creek, Rockingham Co. (as did the McGlammerys) which was patented in 1771. John was probably on this property (bordering that of Harrison & Ewin) for several years before receiving the patent. The Rays were members of the Linville/Smith Creek Baptist Church. John was excommunicated for non-attendance in the 1770s. John Ray also served under Capt. Reuben! Harrison (as did Mathias McGlammery) during the Rev. War, although not part of the Continental Line. I would like more information on John & Susanna. Did they die in Rockingham? When did they sell their Smith Creek property, if ever? Were there other children besides Thomas and John? What is Susanna's maiden name? Due to the destruction of so many Rockingham records, I have had little success in tracking this couple. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MYERS posted by B. Luedtke on Sunday, March 14, 1999

Hello, I have a photo album passed down from my grandmother (Dorothy Roberta (Bell) Griffith) containing about 20 pictures taken in the time just before, during, and just after the Civil War. It apparently belonged to her Bell grandparents, of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Only one photo is labeled on the back with a name, and that is of "CELASA MYERS". The picture was taken at the Dean studio on Main St. in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and shows a young woman, possibly 16 to 18, sitting at a table reading a book. (It reminds me of present-day school photos where the student is shown engaged in some academic activity.) From the size of the photo (3"x4"), the sophistication of the composition, and the absence of a tax stamp, I would guess that it was taken after the Civil War. My theory is that CELESA MYERS was a friend or a distant relative of my Bell ancestors, and that she most probably lived in Rockingham County. (If she were from Maryland, that would have been a very long way to go to have a photograph taken.) The given name "Celasa" sounded Hispanic, so I searched for it on the 'Net and found only two occurrences of it, both present-day, and both at sites in Spanish. This raises the possibility that some of Celasa's family were Hispanic. If anyone links to this person, I would be glad to pass on a copy of the photo. Regards, Betty

ACKER, CLEVENGER, OCKER, SKINNER posted by Richard E. Parr on Thursday, March 25, 1999

I have placed a "Descendants of Jacob Acker" WEB page in circulation. It cover Ackers from Germany, through Chester and Lancaster Counties Pennsylvania, Rockingham County, Virginia and into Delaware and Henry Counties, IN. An invitation is extended to each of you to particapte in an effort to fill out the details of the family, including a compilation of primary and secondary souces. I hope to be able to turn this page into a definitative statement on the family. The page itself is based on information that has been culled over the last several weeks from FTM WEB pages, GENFORUM conversations and a few books. With the exception of the sources used to document the James R. Clevenger and Mary M. Ackers descendants, it is all guesswork and hearsay. Please help me by providing me with either copies of sources or at least pointers to the primary/secondary sources that may exist. Certainly feel free to correct any obvious errors that you see.
