The Cookenour-Reed Cemetery is at the very top of a ridge on the north side of Little Moccasin Creek Valley. There is extremely limited access, as the "road" is no more than a rough trail with some elevation issues. The cemetery today has had some work done to it by Oscar "Junior" Peters, Jr. but is still in a primitive condition. It has been overgrown by trees, covered with debris. But Mr. Peters, despite his age, has cleared around it and removed much wood.
While there are maybe as many as 100 indentations where graves were dug, and many, many small stones used for markers, there is only one headstone in this cemetery, that of Thomas Franklin Reed, Sr. (attach) b. Aug 14, 1837 and d. Apr 13, 1907. It is in surprisingly good condition. His wife is also buried by his side (according to family) but has no stone. She was Ameila "Millie" Brannon b. Jan 9, 1844 and d. Sep 13, 1923.
The Peterson Cemetery books also list a McNutt male, but all that remains of his burial site is a rusted metal frame that once held an identification card. Mr. Peters knew exactly where that grave was from earlier visits.
I did not find anyone who knew of a list of others buried in this cemetery, but I do know for certain 2 of my aunts and 2 uncles who died in infancy are also buried here. They are
1. Clyde Octer McGee b. Sep 1, 1913 d. Oct 8, 1913
2. Julia Margaret McGee b. Jan 15, 1915 d. Sep 19, 1915
3. Carl Hamliton McGee b. Sep 28, 1920 d. Jun 20, 1921
4. Mary Ruth McGee b. Aug 25, 1926 d. Oct 17, 1926
It is believed that my Grandmother selected this place for burial because her grandmother was also buried here. She was Margaret Snodgrass, b. 1841
Later, her Mother and Step Father were supposedly buried here also.
Alvira Snodgrass Winegar Reed b. 1859 d. Jan 23, 1924 and John B. Reed (Thomas F. Reed's son) b. May 23, 1862 d. Jun 27, 1903
