I. P. Kane Donates Funds For FieldGate City Banker Makes Possible Lights, Improvement For Football Field
(Special to The Times)
GATE CITY, Va., Sept. 9.-1. P. Kane, banker here for the past half century, has made possible the lighting and general improvement of the Shoemaker athletic field, where the first football game under lights is scheduled to be played next Saturday night.
He has donated $1,000 toward the project on condition that some civic body guarantees the construction of 500 seats and place a permanent sod in the field. All of this work is scheduled to be completed this season.
The Gate City Rotary club took lover the responsibility of finishing the work, Dr. E. G. Watts, a member said, as he explained that the club was sponsoring the sale of tickets to the first home game.
The new field's name has not been definitely decided, but it will be called the I. P. Kane athletic field or the I. P. Kane Stadium or some similar name, a spokesman of the Rotary Club said, in honor of Mr. Kane.
Kane, also with Patrick Hagan, J. B. Richmond, R. A. Ayers, J. L. Shoemaker, and J. M. Johnson, founded the Bank of Estillville 50 years ago this month. He was made cashier and director of the institution.
The total cost of the Shoemaker project is around $2,400. Approximately $800 remains to be raised, Dr. Watts said.
