Mickey Hendricks Signs Pact
With ‘All-American Redheads’

Mickey Ray Hendricks, who earned national headlines by scoring 81 points in one game eight years ago, has signed a contract to play professional basketball with the “All-American Redheads.”

Mickey was a sophomore at the now-defunct Cleveland High School at Yuma , Va. , when she turned in her 81-point performance against neighboring Midway High.  Before she graduated from Gate City ’s Shoemaker High in 1956, Mickey practically re-wrote the girls’ basketball records for Virginia .

Besides her single-game mark, Mickey still holds records for the most points and the highest per-game average (39.2) for a four year period.

After graduation from high school, she was offered a pro contract with the “Redheads”, but decided to go to college instead.  Mickey attended the University of Calif.

Her contract with the All-American Redheads is for a seven-month period each year.  During these seven months the team will be playing six and seven nights a week.

The team opens its season in Nova Scotia on Oct. 19.  The team will be playing all over the U. S. , Canada , and Mexico .  According to Mickey, the team also has tentative plans for a European tour.

The All-American Redheads play Tennessee for three years.

She also played basketball in various industrial leagues in Kingsport , Knoxville , and Los Angeles , on men’s teams and played by men’s rules.  Mickey said she understands the team has a game scheduled in Gate City sometime this season.

The team has seven members including two rookies this year.  Mickey thinks she will probably be playing guard, because at 5-10, she is the shortest member of the squad.

She is to report for practice at Caraway, Ark. , next Thursday.  By then the natural brunette said she will be “a redhead.”
