Ina Marie Underwood
APPALACHIA, Va. — Ina Marie Underwood, 85, passed away Sunday (March 29, 2009) at Civista Medical Center, LaPlata, Md.
She was formerly of Appalachia, Va. Mrs. Underwood was a sales representative with drug stores for 32 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Christian Church of Appalachia. She enjoyed quilting, flowers, puzzles, scrabble, reading her Bible and being with family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Edna Lovell Wallen; husband, Howard Underwood; sister, Margie Underwood; and one granddaughter, Allison Mahan.
She is survived by one son, Herbert C. Mahan of Thayne, Wyo.; daughter, Judith E. Mattingly and husband, David of LaPlata, Md.; three grandchildren, Michael Brummitt, Jennifer Kimoto and Linda Bowling; five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Garrett Lee officiating.
Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Robert Lee Underwood
GATE CITY -- Robert Lee Underwood, 50 of Route 1, Gate
City, was pronounced dead on arrival at Holston Valley Community Hospital
early Friday evening [5/30/1969] after suffering an apparent heart attack.
He was born in Alabama and was retired from the Air Force
having held the rank of master sergeant.
At the time of his death he was a mechanic at Holston Defense.
He was a member of the Marble Point Church.
Surviving are his widow, Emma Sue Darnell Underwood; two
step-sons, Daniel Paul Daugherty of Gate City, Sgt. Roger D. Daugherty of
Kaiserlautern, Germany; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Harper of Auburndale,
Fla.; two half-sisters, Mrs. Billie Light of Abbeyville, Ala., Mrs. Montez
Strickland of Frankfurt, Germany; five half-brothers, Carl Gibson of
Jasper, Ala., Capt. Frank Strickland of Spokane, Wash., Officer Lloyd
Strickland of Frankfurt, Germany, Officer Clarence Strickland of Vietnam,
and Officer Billy Strickland, with the U. S. Navy, unknown; and one
Gate City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Funeral services for Robert Lee Underwood of Gate City
Route 1 have been set tentatively for 2 p.m. Monday in the Gene Falin
Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home with the Rev. J. W. Bowen
and Rev. Leland T. Smith officiating.
Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be members of Hammond Post No. 3, American Legion,
who will also conduct a graveside service.

Killed In France
Duffield,Va. -S'Sg. Charlie E. Upchurch has been officially reported by the U. S. War Department as "killed in action", somewhere in France, September 23. He had been in the service of the armed forces for the past six years. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Upchurch and son, Charles E. Upchurch 2 make their home here.
Other survivors are his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Upchurch of Duffield, Va.; four sisters; Mrs. James Roach of East Stone Gap, Va.; Mrs. Ray Bailey of Big Stone Gap, Va.; Mrs. Luke Lamb, Duffield, Va.; Mrs. Robert Sallie, Duffield, Va.; six brothers; E. B. of Big Stone Gap; J. E., W. R., I. N., F. R., all of Kingsport; and J. D. Upchurch of Camp Clairborne, La. Sergeant Upchurch was a member of the Baptist Church of Duffield, Va.

Celia "Sid" (Jones) Upchurch
KINGSPORT - Celia "Sid" Upchurch, 94, went to her heavenly home Monday (Jan. 13, 2003) at Indian Path Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Scott County, Va., and was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap, Va. Her residence for the past eight years has been with her daughter and caregiver, Helen Carpenter of Kingsport.
She was a loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer B. Upchurch; parents, Elbert and Nancy Jones; brothers, Art Jones, Willard Jones and Mesby Jones; sister, Donnie Chandler.
Surviving are daughters, Helen Carpenter, Kingsport, Marie Chisenhall, Dade City, Fla.; son, Jimmy Upchurch, Big Stone Gap, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. Friends may also call anytime at the home of her daughter, Helen Carpenter.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Wrightly Salling officiating.
Burial will follow in the Glencoe Cemetery (Big Stone Gap, Va.)
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Pitts, Scott Estep, Wayne Chisenhall, Benny Pitts and Roger Estep.
Floyd Ingle Upchurch
DAYTON, OHIO - Floyd Ingle Upchurch, 91, of Dayton, Ohio, died Wednesday (March 22, 2006).
He retired from Sheffield/Bendix Corp. and was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church in Dayton.
Mr. Upchurch was a member of the Kingsport Lodge #688 F.& A.M. in the southern jurisdiction of Kingsport.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Magline "Maggie" Upchurch and son, Glen Daniel Upchurch.
Surviving are his daughter, Delores Jean Upthegrove of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Paul E. Upchurch of Washington; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Mary, Paula, Susan, Danny, Donna, and Teresa; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Mitchell M. Whisnant officiating.
Masonic rites conducted by the Kingsport Lodge #688 F.& A.M.
Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery.
Glen Daniel Upchurch
HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio — Glen D. Upchurch, 57, died Sunday
(Aug. 8, 1999) at his home.

Isaac Newton "Ike" Upchurch
GRAY - Ike N. Upchurch , 116 Lake Haven Dr., Boone Lake, died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Range Hall.
He was a native of Duffield, Va. and had lived in this area since 1963. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Gray. He had held may positions over the years in the church, he had been a youth director, teacher of the Sunday School Class The Golden Agers, and active with the Youth Groups. Mr. Upchurch was an avid skeet shooter and hunter, he was a member of a local and National Skeet Shooter Association, Kettlefoot Rod and Gun Club of Bristol, Unaka Rod and Gun Club of Johnson City, Ducks Unlimited of Kingsport, North American Hunting Club, a former member of Cherokee Rod and Gun Club of Kingsport. He was a member of Elk's Lodge No 825 of Johnson City for over 50 years, The American Legion Post No. 0003 of Kingsport for over 50 years, Moose Lodge No 1831 of Bristol, Va. He was a member of the Tennessee Republican Party and sustained member of the Republican National Committee. Mr. Upchurch was very active leader in the late 1940's with the Sullivan County 4-H Clubs. He held a position in the 4-H Club Congress of Sullivan County and he was a leader in many field trips in the 4-H Club. He was a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross at Indian Path Hospital in the dietary department for seven years. Mr. Upchurch was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country during World War II, as a Radio Training Instructor, the Koran Conflict, and active in the U.S. Army Reserves for 20 years. He retired from the State of Tennessee as a Radio Engineer. He was FCC Licensed. He previously worked for 18 years for WKPT radio with his own Farmers Radio Talk Show, WKIN radio, WMCH radio of Church Hill and WGAT radio of Gate City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter M. and Almira Peters Upchurch ; one son, James Upchurch ; four brothers and one sister.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Charlsie Middleton Upchurch , of the home; daughter, Joyce Upchurch , Novato, Calif.; son, Robert Upchurch , Reno, Nev.; grandchildren, Claude Hager III, Elizabeth Hager, Robert Upchurch Jr., Russell Upchurch ; great-grandchildren, Katy Upchurch , Kevin Upchurch , Nicholas Hager Greene; sisters, Helga Upchurch Sallee, Kingsport, Nan Upchurch Lamb, Duffield, Va.; brother, Floyd Upchurch , Dayton, Ohio; many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Snyder's Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Foster officiating. Eulogy will be by Claude Hager III. Special music will be by Mrs. Diane Barker.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Family, friends, minister and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Barker, Steve Thompson, Paul Keys, David Gschwind, Mckinley Winters, Hugh Sluder, Robert Upchurch Jr., Russell Upchurch .

Jimmie Lynn Upchurch
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Jimmie L. Upchurch, 69, passed away Tuesday (June 15, 2004) at Wellmont-Bristol Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Roda, Va., and lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap. He was a welder and owner of the former Sportscenter in Big Stone Gap. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was of the Holiness faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer B. and Celia (Jones) Upchurch.
Surviving are his wife, Debbie Turkett Upchurch; two sons, Justin Neal Upchurch and Jimmie L. Upchurch Jr., both of Big Stone Gap; two daughters, Tina Joan Cole and Sandy Bailey, both of Big Stone Gap; five grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Chisenhall, Dade City, Fla., and Helen Carpenter, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Hagan Davis officiating.
Military rites, by the Norton VFW Post #4301, will be conducted prior to the memorial service.
Magaline "Maggie" (Harkleroad" Upchurch
DAYTON, Ohio - Magline "Maggie" Upchurch, 85, died at her home in Dayton on Monday (June 23, 2003).
She was born Oct. 1, 1917 in Kingsport to the late James F. and Nora Harkleroad. Mrs. Upchurch was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio.
A son, Glen Daniel Upchurch preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Floyd I. Upchurch, Dayton; one daughter, Delores Jean Upthegrove, Dayton; one son, Paul E. Upchurch, Oak Harbor, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Mary, Paul, Susan, Danny, Donna, Teresa, and their families; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown Kingsport.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Holston View Cemetery.
