  • Celebrating in the Village of Surry, A Christmas Story by Anne Rowell Worrell.
This is a delightful story of what it was like to live in Surry, Virginia at Christmas time in the 1930s. Today it is nearly unheard of to have your entire extended family living within a few miles of your home. Then it was the norm. Then neighbors visited and everyone took part in the Church services and caroling. This is a great book, and anyone with a past in Surry should have one.
    ($8.50 including tax and shipping.)

Of note is the fact that Anne Rowell Worrell's sister, Gray R. Henry, wrote It Took A Village, her remembrances of growing up in Surry, also for sale by the Society. And their mother, Ethel R. Rowell, wrote the history of Lawne's Creek Church listed below. So much talent in one family!

The Society is pleased to announce that Gordon W. [Bo] Bohannan and his family have received the third printing of this book. It is hard bound, and unlike earlier editions, is indexed. Everyone who has Surry County roots, or a love of its history, should have a copy.
Perhaps no book of Surry County, Virginia, history has been as popular as this book written by A. W. Bohannan and first published in 1927. Mr. Bohannan was Treasurer of Surry County for nearly fifty years and a great lover of the County and its history. He wrote of old homes, places, churches, tales and events. As he roamed around Surry County he talked with the "old folks" and made notes of our oral history. Many had first hand recollections of the Civil War. From these conversations and his extensive research, this book was written. There was a second printing in 1957. For decades it has been nearly impossible to secure a copy. The few that came to market were very expensive. Now you can get this new edition for a very reasonable price.
($23.50 each including tax and shipping.)
Note: Old Surry is available at meetings and the Society's office for $21.00 including tax.

  • "Old Town of Cobham" by Aurelius Wilson Bohannan.
This is a reprint of a magazine article by A. W. Bohannan in 1949 entitled "The Old Town of Cobham". It is about 20 pages. This reprint is made available to the Society through the generosity of Gordon W. "Bo" Bohannan, past president of the Society, with the funds being earmarked for the Sociey's Building Fund.
    ($8.50 including tax and shipping)

  • Otto Robert Eugene Osterle of Surry County, Virginia, "A WORLD I SOLDIER" by M. D. Harrison.
Osterle was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but moved to Claremont, Va. He served in France in World War I. Fortunately, a collection of letters, notes, picture post cards, photos and envelopes survived and Michael Harrison has done a great job of identifying, photographing, organizing and gathering information on Osterle and these items.
As memories fade, and surviving veterans are fewer each year, this book gives a rare insight of one who fought in The Great War.
    ($8.50 including tax and shipping)

  • Surry County at War 1861-1865 by Willis W. Bohannan. This is a reprint of the 1963 book. In the decades before this book was written, A. W. Bohannan, visited with many of the "Old Folks" in the county and took copious notes on the Civil War. His son, Willis W. Bohannan, used these valuable records of Surry County in the Civil War to write this book. Most are first-hand notes from those who participated in the war. This reprint is made available to the Society through the generosity of Gordon W. "Bo" Bohannan, past president of the Society, with the funds being earmarked for the Sociey's Building Fund.
($17.00 each including tax and shipping.)

  • Rare Surry County Newspaper copy for sale!
