Welcome to the Southampton County, Virginia USGenWeb Project |
Southampton County was formed from Isle of Wight Co. in 1749;
a portion (west of the Blackwater River) of Nansemond Co. was later added.
The county seat is Courtland (first called Flowers' Bridge, then Jerusalem).
The City of Franklin was formed from Southampton Co. in 1961, incorporated by court order.

The Brantley Association of America has undertaken an
incredible project- digitizing the early court records of Southampton County.
Volunteers are needed to index these digital records.
For more information, read J.
Kenneth Brantley's letter to the Southampton Historical Society.
