I am seeking information about my grandfather John Robert HICKS. I've been told that he was married to a Martha Bond or Bonds from Orange County, Va. He is reportedly buried in Spotsylvania County in the Hicks Cementery which is not too far from Spotsylvania Courthouse. Although I think I have some leads I can't seem to verify things.
Thanks.

J.L. POWELL and Carrie E. POWELL
Looking for all the information I can on this married couple from the 1800's. They were plantation owners in Spotsylvania County. They lived and died in Spotsylvania County. I'm not sure where they were born. J.L. Powell was a partner in a law firm called POWELL BROTHERS that practiced in the county but somehow based out of Philidelphia PA., I believe.

Can someone tell me if the SAMS Plantation in Spotsylvania County still exists? If so, is it open to the public or is it privately owned? We are travelling to Virginia the week of the 4th of July with my son and daughter-in-law. The founder of the plantation, James SAMS, Sr. is a direct ancestor of my daughter-in-law, Kara Heileman Watson. Any information about the SAMS plantation would be appreciated.

Trying to trace family history of Benjamin WILTSHIRE / WILSHIRE who married Nancy KIDD in Spotsylvania Co. in 1806. Circa 1809 they had a child named Benjamin Jr. who married Elizabeth Ann THORNTON, in 1833 in Orange Co., VA. Benjamin Jr. changed the spelling of his last name to "Wilshire". Benjamin had a brother named John B. Wiltshire (who married Angelina Jacobs in Feb. 1839). Benjamin Sr. may have been married to Sally JONES (Spotsylvania Co.) in 1797. Have been unable to trace family history backwards from 1806.

Seeking ANY info on Francis WHITE who married Miss DURRETT -One sources shows that he married Leah Durrett daughter of Robert DURRETT and Elizabeth GOODLOE of Spotsylvania Co., VA--There is a good chance this is correct as I had narrowed it down to either Leah or Katherine (sisters)--The only info I have on Francis is that he died between 21Nov and 10Dec 1802 Abbeville Dist., SC---I believe the marriage to Leah would have been aft Dec 1767 due to court papers showing her as under the guardianship of George Chapman and the orphan of Robert DURRETT --Based on children birthdates she was still living in 1786 but deceased before her husband in 1802--I would love to know when and where the marriage occured, when and where she died and any info on the parents or siblings of Francis WHITE. If there is anyone out there interested in this family, I have descendant info on Francis and Leah White that I would love to share.

My John and Ann DAVISON (often spelled as DAVIDSON by second parties) purchased 100 acres of land from James Taylor of K&Q Co, VA on 6-July-1725. At the time, my Davisons lived in the part of Sposylvania that became Orange Co (near the present town of Orange).

Also, a William Davison lived in the vicinity. Relationship to my John, if any, is not known -- although from examining records, William appears to be much older than my John.

John and Ann Davison named their first son William.

In 1742, John and Ann Davison sold their Orange County land and moved to Amelia Co, VA (part that became Prince Edward Co).

John and Ann Davison had following children, with estimated birth year - probably plus or minus a year or two, as named in order of John's 1754 Will:

  1. William b: c1726 Married a Sarah Bowman and he died in Prince Edward Co, VA.
  2. Richard b: c1728 Married a Mary (family name unk although some claim Ewing, there is no documentation to support that notion) he died in Prince Edward Co, VA. Widow Mary and decendants moved to Fayette Co, KY.
  3. Joshua b: c1730 Married Sarah "Sally" Owen and he died in Prince Edward Co, VA. Decendants mostly moved to Fleming and Mason Co, KY and to Maury Co, TN.
  4. Daniel b: c1732 Married a Nancy (family name unk) moved to Anson Co, NC and was there around 1800.
  5. Elizabeth b: c1734 Married James Atkins in 1756 and she later moved to Anson/Montgomery Co, NC.
  6. George b: c1736 Married 2d Brazilian Atkins and moved to Anson/Montgomery Co, NC.
  7. Ambrose b: c1738 Apparently married dau of Robert Atkins (her first name unk) and he moved to Anson/Montgomery Co, NC. Atkins wife was deceased before 1777 when Robert Atkins made out his will.

Am particularly interested in tracing my John and Ann Davison back beyond the 1725 facts. There is so much misinformation on the internet, that I have gone back to the "basics" of research based on factual records. But, lack of early records in Virginia for the "burned" counties are hampering progress.

[The following was submitted as information for anyone researching the HERNDON family of Spotsylvania Co.]

I hope this information helps someone.

From the McKinney Messenger, May 22, 1873, volume 17, no. 39. (McKinney, Collin Co., TX)

"Yesterday (Wednesday) we had the pleasure of forming the acquaintance of a venerable old gentleman - a Mr. George HERNDON, of Cooper county, Missouri, who came to this county about a week since on a visit to two of his sons, the Messrs, George and James HERNDON, of this vicinity. The old gentleman has been a resident of Missouri for more than forty years, having settled in that State in the year 1831. He was born in Spotsylvania county, Virginia, in the year 1779, (three years after the declaration of American Independence) and consequently is now in the ninety-fifth year of his age. His hearing is a little impaired, but his general health and bodily and mental vigor, seem to be remarkably good for one so aged. His descendants, we are told, number about three hundred. He left town on the up-train on the Central, an hour after our interview with him, for his home in Missouri."

BOSWELL Family of Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

I am searching for information regarding George BOSWELL the son of John Boswell II and Ann Ransome Boswell. The Boswell family relocated to Spotsylvania County, Virginia from Gloucester, and George Boswell was born in Sportsylvania around 1737. George's father died around 1741 leaving four sons and two daughters aging from infancy to eleven years of age. I am searching for George Boswell's wife's maiden name and the information regarding thier location of marriage. I have infomation that her name was Mildred, however, no maiden name has surfaced. George Boswell was one of the sons who divided the estate of his late father John Boswell II. George is the father of three boys and three girls who all later moved from Shenandoah, Virginia to Ohio and later settling in Indiana. He was to have fought in the Revolutionary War and he voted in the House of Burgess for Fielding Lewis. He later worked with Benjamine Davis in the carpenters business. He worked with Davis around Culpepper. The last information on George, he was living around Madison County. We believe he died around 1788.

I am asking for any information on PIERCEs living in Spotsylvania County, particularly late 1700s - mid 1800s. I am also interested in two brothers who moved from this county to Halifax County, Virginia. Their names are Edgar T. PIERCE and Albert PIERCE. I believe my GGGGrandfather, William H. PIERCE may have originated from this county and I have a hunch he is related to these two. William's birth is estimated between 1800-1812. Any Pierce information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I would like to know the status of a Spotsylvania plantation, NEWPORT. It was the home of Colonel John WALLER from somtime during the 1720's until his death in 1754, at which time is was left to his son William. Is there anything left of this plantation, and if so, is it possible to visit it in any fashion?

Searching for parents/relatives of Charles SMITH, thought to be born in Spotsylvania County, Va. about 1735. His parents are believed to be John Smith, Gent. and wife Mary COLSTON, both of Richmond County, Va. I have records of Charles (HH) Smith being in Amelia County, Va. around 1756, where he was a soldier in the Rev. War. and married Elizabeth HENDRICK, (dau. of John Hendrick, grdau. of Hans Hendrick). Charles later moved on to Halifax County, Va. where he was until the 1790's. He is believed to have moved on through N. Carolina and settled in Floyd/Jackson county Georgia in early 1800-1805. He is believed to be related to the John Smith and William Thornton Smith in the Amelia county area around Flatt Creek and Sandy Creek/River.
If anyone has any record of his birth or any other info I would appreciate any info you could share with me.
