I am trying to trace the parents of William GRAY, who was believed to be born in Spotsylvania Co in 1746. William married Mary POWELL about 1780 and they moved to Patrick Co shortly after. William passed away there in 1826 and Mary followed in 1832. Mary had brothers Ptolemy, James and William as planters in Spotsylvania Co. Any information would be appreciated.

Our ancestor was Henry NEWTON whose wife's name was Sarah

On the tombstone in Missouri, of one of their many children, it reads: "Harrison Newton son of Henry and Sarah Newton of Monroe co., TN, Rhea co TN and Spottsylvania Co. Virginia." I have documented Henry and Sarah as owning land first in Rhea and next in Monroe County Tennessee where they raised their children and was looking for the next step back in time when I found this tombstone inscription. Harrison Newton is the brother of our Great Grandfather William Gilbert Newton. For Harrisons stone to have this inscription, the family must have known something... I have posted a web site for Henry and Sarah and their children at: http://www.geocities.com/roznewton_2000/

Harrison Newton's descendant the late Alwilda Newton Page was my friend and correspondent. She began what is now the defunct Newton Quarterly and helped other Newtons find their ancestry but not hers and ours. Our site gives the history of the Quarterly and tells of its current state as well.

I am looking to tie Henry into the Newtons of Spotsylvania Co. I have purchased a copy of : A History of Early Spotsylvania by James Roger Mansfield 1977. I am aware of the Will of Henry Newton from these pages and will be trying in the next weeks to document the children this Henry means when he says "..'having already given out to all my other children as much of my Estate as I intend.." I also have the CD Spottsylvania Co Land Records 1722-1751 from Ultimate Family Data Library and have extracted the Newtons from those two sources. I live near the Historic Genealogy Collection in Fort Wayne Indiana and will be collecting the Newtons from this source for Spotsylvania in efforts to sort of place all the Newtons in prospective families to see where ours may or may not fit.

It is my thought that our Henry Newton who says he was 50 in 1850 may have came to these Newtons from Ireland because he states in the 1850 census that he was born in Ireland and his wife in Tennessee.

I am interested in discovering if Newtons who are still living in Spotsylvania have published any genealogies since the marriages in your home pages are from modern times. Anyone who may connect the Newtons and Spotsylvania is welcome to write me. I shall be happy to report back my discoveries and records found as well.

I have been working on this family for around 25 years beginning with an orphaned grandfather, it is reported at the web site with other Newton Wills found that turned out not to be ours.

If you do a Google search on my name you will discover that I have not been lazy but have compiled indexes and other works for the Sheldon Family Association.
