Last Will and Testament of John R. Straughan

In the name of God Amen

I John R. Straughan of Spotsylvania County, and State of Virginia, 
calling to mind  the uncertainty of human life, and wishing to dispose 
of all such worldly estate, as it hath pleased god [sic] to bless me 
with; do hereby make this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form 
following; revoking all former wills or testaments by me heretofore 
made.

Item 1st.  I desire that all my just debts shall be paid.

Item.  After the payment of all my just debts I desire that my wife Anna 
B.E.H. Straughan may possess and enjoy the residue of my estate, both 
real and personal, during her natural life, and after her death it is my 
wish that it may be equally divided amongst all my surviving Children to 
be Enjoyed by them and their Heirs forever.

Item.  Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my friends John Stewart 
and Benjamin Dismukes executors to this my last will and testament.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of 
May in the year of our Lord 1827.

At a Court held for Spotsylvania County the 11th day of August 1828
The last Will and testament of John R. Straughan deceased was proved by 
the oaths of Nathaniel Dismukes and Thurston Oliver two of the witnesses 
thereto and ordered to be recorded and John Stewart and Benjamin 
Dismukes the Executors therein named came into Court and refused to take 
upon themselves the burthen of the execution thereof and in the motion 
of Nathaniel Dismukes who made oath thereto and together with Benjamin 
Dismukes his security entered into and acknowledged a bond in the 
penalty of $500 conditioned as the law directs Certificate is granted 
him for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of the said 
John R. Straughan with his will aforesaid annexed in due form.
