Who was William Richard Hardy? 

 

William Richard Hardy was an American Patriot and a Revolutionary War soldier.  He was born on 21 October 1722, the son of Richard Hardy and Mary Covington in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. William married Mary Elizabeth Wynne (1723-1798) in 1742 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.  They had four sons and one daughter.

 

William entered the Continental Army as a private on 14 February 1778 at 56 years of age.  He served in the company of Captain  William Grimes in the 15th Virginia Regiment. In June 1778 he was transferred to

Lt. Colonel John Cropper's company of the 11th and the 15th Virginia Regiment.  In December 1778 he was again transferred to Captain David Mason's company 11th Virginia Regiment where he served until February 1779 when he was discharged.  He was at Valley Forge with General George Washington.

 

William was a vestryman from 1780 to 1786 at Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia.  His will is dated 21 October 1790 and he died in Lunenburg County on 13 January 1791.
