Newport News Public Library System
The Newport News Public Library System consists of four libraries located in different areas of the city. The System's main page allows you to access the library catalog, a short history of Newport News and a link to Ask-A-Librarian. Ask-A-Librarian allows you to ask a reference question by e-mail.
The Martha Woodroof Hiden Virginiana Collection is housed in the Main Street Library of the Newport News Public Library System. The collection contains more than five thousand books and periodicals dealing with Local, Commonwealth and Family History. The collection includes Newport News City Directories back to 1896, The local newspaper (Daily Press) on microfilm back to 1898, an exceptional map collection as well as many other valuable resources.

The Mariner's Museum Library
The Mariner's Museum located in Newport News, Virginia has one of the most extensive nautical collections in the world. The Mariner's Museum has a very nice research library containing nautical information such as information on ships, ships passenger lists and ports. The catalog can be accessed on the Web Site.
Tidewater Genealogical Society
The Tidewater Genealogical Society is housed in the old 1884 Warwick County Court House. The group is very active. They sponsor a group bus trip to research sites in Washington, D.C. on an almost monthly basis. They meet regularly and have a genealogy library staffed by volunteers three days per week.
The Library of Virginia
The Library of Virginia is the Commonwealth's State Library and Archives. The collection includes books, microfilm, periodicals, manuscripts, documents and an extensive collection of maps. This Library contains a great amount of material for the genealogist. The following link will take you to the page that lists the county and city information they have in microfilm.
