A List of
Subscribers to Rev. Robert S. Sheffeys Offer to Teach School
in the Vicinity of Porters Cross Roads, September 14th,
1840.
Wythe County, Virginia September 14th, 1840
I, Robert S. Sheffey, offer my services to my friends and neighbors to teach a school in their vicinity during the following winter.
I would have commenced earlier this fall had it not been for the consideration, and also my wish, to give all an equal opportunity of
beginning at the commencement of my session. It being well known that the press of business with farmers would not justify an earlier
commencement. The education of children is a matter of the highest importance, not only to parents, but the community at large.
Therefore, I am induced to believe that I will receive a liberal and immediate patronage. The condition and terms are as follows:
First, I require that the subscribers to this paper build a spacious, warm and comfortable school house at soon as possible at the place
heretofore determined on. Secondly: I will be willing to commence with thirty scholars; and if I find it practicable I may receive as many
more as I can attend to well. I expect to teach a session of five months commencing the first Monday in October if the cause be prepaid
in that time. The tuition fee for scholars is one dollar and thirty cents per month. It is to be understood that Saturdays and Sundays and
exempted in this time. If time be lost by me I will make it up at the end of the session. On the other hand if time be lost by the subscribers,
they are privileged to make it good by an extra scholar or scholars [except in a case of sickness]; if not the lost time will not be considered.
It is my wish and absolutely my intention to keep good order, have my rules strictly observed, and pray attention personally to the recitations.
