Honorable
Stephen HOWE, born September 29, 1796 was the fourth of 10 children born
to Stephen and Judith Hunt Howe. He was born in the second framed house
built in Lunenburg, known as the "old Barnard house." Here he passed
his youth, manhood and old age, and, as other farmers’ sons had a maximum
of labor and a minimum of learning. Having made the best of his meager
advantages he taught school for many terms. He possessed much mechanical
skill and worked at the trade of wheelwright until after his marriage when
he became a merchant. He became a well respected and successful merchant
known for his integrity and honesty. An old line Whig and Republican, he
was town clerk for 48 years and reelected for his 49th term the month of
his death, March 14, 1873. These elections were all unanimous with one
exception. His religious views were that of the Congregationalists. He
married Harriet Patterson, a native of the town. She died in 1871. They
had three children: Charles, Eliza Jane, and Henry.
