Isaac
M. RICKER was born in Groton, VT on 10 April 1839. Living at home he read
of the rich mines discovered in the Pike’s Peak country and when of age
left home to make his fortune. His ardor for the great discovery cooled
and he returned home the same fall. (Note: There is a lengthy and exciting
story of his trip home included in the article.)
Upon arriving home he devoted his time
to agricultural pursuits until enlistment in the 12th Vermont Volunteers
and served out his enlistment. On December 3, 1863 he married Mary Jane,
the 17th child of John and Phebe Taisey. He began to invest in business,
first in lumber with the Hon. J.R. Darling under the name Darling &
Ricker; buying land, harvesting lumber and retailing the products. He developed
a admirable reputation as an honest and creative businessman, succeeded
Judge Darling in the business and his firm was in the employ of several
other manufacturers in marketing their lumber.
