Hon.
Ephraim Paddock was born in Holland, MA. on 4 January 1780. In his
early youth he came to Vermont on foot and alone with nothing but his stick
and a bundle "whose contents numbered but three articles of dress most
essential for change". He found his brother, Dr. Paddock in Craftsbury,
VT. and made a partial home there for several years. Desiring an education
he studied at Peacham Academy, studied law with Hon. Wm. Griswold in Danville,
Vt.
He married, started his law practice
and settled in St.Johnsbury, VT in 1807. Elected to the supreme court in
1828 a position he occupied for the next three years. After retiring,
his legal interests waned and he tended to occupy himself with farming
and mercantile interest while enjoying a domestic and Christian lifestyle.
He made a public profession of his religious faith in 1831 and united himself
with the Congregational Church.
His only son, Horace Paddock was born
in St. Johnsbury on 16 June 1809 and died March 11, 1877. There is
a descriptive and somewhat lengthy article attesting to Ephraim's legal
and intellectual character in the Gazetteer. The article does not mention
his wife's name.
