John Franklin STEVENS was born in Walden, May 20,
1816. He was a son of Ebenezer and Betsey [Perkins] Stevens. His education
was those of common schools but he was a boy of active intelligence and
an inquiring mind. He followed his fathers calling, that of an agriculturist.
He married, January 1, 1846, Elvira R. Farrington and had one son, Charles
Henry, who is a farmer, and a resident of Walden. A Methodist in
religious belief, a Democrat in politics, he represented Walden for three
legislative terms. He held various town offices as justice of the peace,
selectman and overseer of the poor for 12 years, a listerfor eight years
and held these offices at the time of his sudden death November 21, 1885.
He was a man worthy of responsible trust whose word was as good as his
bond. He was a valuable and esteemed citizen.
